Skip Beat! is dropped… kind of

“I’m working with TV TOKYO to bring you the best anime titles immediately after broadcast! Starting January 8th, we’ll have the newest eps of Naruto Shippuden, Shugo Chara, Skip Beat!, and many other titles on CR with english subs for ppl everywhere possible (with some exceptions like Japan)”
– Crunchyroll

In other words, Skip Beat is licensed. Back in Chihiro v1, we did sub Geass, I know. However, our staff as compared to then is completely different, our subs are completely different, and we have a different outlook on things.

On the other hand, there is no indication as of yet whether Crunchyroll will be subbing the episodes that air until January 8th. As such, unless the situation changes, we will sub until episode 13, and then drop the show.

Also, no complaints of “Oh, their TL sucks! Oh, their timing sucks! Oh, you suck for dropping it!”, etc. We exist to provide subs to shows, not to out-do anyone.

  • Moka Espresso

My, my… Guess it happens frequently in the subbing world ^^

  • gego

    oh crap.
there is not more to say..
    but, oh crap…

what does there service cost? if its more then 10$ per year then i won’t join…

  • I’d rather watch Anime when I feel like it, in high quality, than stream from a website. Oh well, Hearing about licences is a good thing. Means I can buy the DVD’s sooner ๐Ÿ™‚

  • lol

well… R.I.P. FREE Fansubs! Sooner or later it will be over I guess.

  • FlyTaggart

Just who the hell is Crunchyroll?
And why does the Things he/they said mean it is licensed?

Im from Germany so I dont know anything connecting USA and Animes so please explain it to me.

But this is shit. Hopefully he/them make good subs

  • Akuma-chan

    nonononononoNOOOO!!!!!
    *sob*
post some YHBT please, I can’t believe it….
Anyway, thanks for your great work, hope other projects will be done to the end ^_^

  • Vlaeghe

http://www.crunchyroll.com is a streaming site, that provides subs to their anime.
If they start cooperating with anime studio’s it means they’ll get higher quality raws + subs… and it’ll be streamed…
I just took a look at it myself (and watched skip beat 7 *cough*)… It’s not a bad site.
Not as good quality as fansubbing services provide, but perhaps with this change that’ll improve as well.

Anyways, I’m glad you guys will stick to it till episode 13 at least. I do like to get HQ anime from here ๐Ÿ˜›

  • MV

ARE u kidding me omg noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

plz dont drop i came to chihiro for skipbeat i never miss an episode seens i heard about chihiro

    omg nooooo

  • MV

    oh and why do u wana sub naruto sucks and ist there a subing group subing naruto {dattabayo}

  • JTDR

Well, Chrunchyroll is some sort of page like youtube- or google-video but in the difference that Chrunchyroll, in a few months, will be made special for streaming animes in original lanugage with sub. The subs should be out one hour after the relase in the TV. To make a long story short, ,we can`t call it no more FANSUB but PROSUB.

Anyway. I thought that something like that will happend and the consequences will be that in a few of years not many people will use theirs free time for subbing animes for other peoples like us.
Thats means, for example the page animesuki, that every season less fansubs will be relased to donwload. I think in a few years FANSUB-GROUPS won`t exist anymore.
Sure, it`s cool for people because you don`t make any crime watching the episodes from web but you need internet and watching eveytime with publicity it`s not really funny. Well, let`s donwload so much as we can.

  • Acatoki

    OUT OF JOB TRANSLATOR LFJOB

  • Collective1

MV, chihiro are not subbing naruto, that;s the quote from crunchyroll, not chihiro themselves which states why they cannot continue with skip beat ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Duratrix

Just continue subbing skip beat, you’ll make lots of fans happy (me included) =D
Hail chihiro for subbing skip beat xD
Destroy them for dropping it (Just Kidding … or not???)

  • Vlaeghe

    the catch is…

members get to see it 1 hour after it’s out…
    non-members have to wait 1 week ๐Ÿ˜›

  • MizunoKage

oh well, sad but… what can we do, still great job on what you’ve already done and will still be doing!

  • Xian

ah well, it was great while it lasted ๐Ÿ™ (but i still hope for a miracle for Skip Beat)
Looks like i gotta find another sub for Skip Beat or watch it 1 week late :\
Your team did (and is still DOING) a great job with the subs. Keep up the great work ๐Ÿ˜€

  • MV

my bad sorry i got confuced well chihiro i dont like what your thinking oh well

  • hanzo

meh if strike witches is anything to go on i’d give it a day tops after the downloads are added on crunchyroll before someone uploads em to mininova or some other download site so its not so bad really if u dont wanna watch em on a streaming site.

  • I don’t mean to hassle, out of curiosity, when is Zettai Karen Children episode 32 coming out subbed? Is it just delayed with circumstances that are beyond chihiro’s control? Or are you just falling behind with it?

(both ZKC 32 and 33 raws are out on nyaa torrents, i’m just curious.)

  • MV

ok wtf i went to Crunchyroll and it looks gay my ass how the fuc do people go to that site

its my opinion dont get mad peace

  • JDoraime

This could be a big step forward. For me, the greatest appeal of fansubs is the two-year wait between an episode’s air time and the time it’s officially released in the U.S.. I doubt they’ll air everything this way, so there will still be a need for fansubs. And, of course, there’s the chance the industry will screw things up horribly…

  • z n 1

question, if per say they start to sub ef – a tale of melodies then would you stop that even tho the show is your “signature show”

  • MV

i think they are goin to screw up bad just wait paying to watch anime wtf

there goin to charge just watch

  • Maruno

Crunchyroll does a good thing for anime, in that it releases recent anime instead of waiting years to release an English version.

The problem, however (and it’s a really big problem) is that they don’t allow non-Americans to watch anything. I’m an Englishman, and if Chihiro stops subbing this series then I simply won’t be able to watch it, which is an awful thing to happen.

I also prefer to download my anime, and have never streamed any yet, so Crunchyroll doesn’t help in that respect either.

Please do reconsider subbing Skip Beat. You’ll make everyone happy.

  • Akabane Kun

I think the best option to the future of non jap otakus is to start learning jap and start seeing RAWs,prob is learning jap is very expensive >_>

  • koo

lol crunchyroll bunch of fat fags earning cash on ilegall fansubs

  • celes

doesn’t matter for me as long as the raws are still distributed in toshokan ๐Ÿ˜€
if the raws were stopped, that would make a big trouble. But if it’s just the sub, well, you can either watch it online in crunchy or get the raws from toshokan..
try to learn japanese. it’s not as hard as you thought ^_^

  • oh well if chihiro drops skip beat, another anonomiss fansubber will pick it up and continue it, dunno when though.

  • Draon

What a shame. For anyone that’s actually checked out there site, and comparing there anime to the ones created here at Chihiro there is a Drastic quality difference. Crunchy’s anime quality being appalling.

While the quote of “higher quality raws” is all good and well, the sites streaming transfer quality will never keep up with a 200-300m mkv rip. Simply put the quality loss makes this site an eyesore.

  • Webbmaster62

Well, we still have to wait and see how they do it. Even if the shows are subbed on CR. Doesn’t mean a US company has licensed it. But then again, the show was announced licensed on CR right before the fall season started. We jsutdon’t know who yet. LOL But this also goes for any other shows.

  • Webbmaster62

Also, people saying fan subbing will die out… I seriously doubt that. Some one will always sub a series. Your also forgetting about the groups that do the very old series too. So fan subbing probably never gonna die.

  • Lilith

@Maruno, I am from Europe aswell but I don’t seem to have trouble with crunchyroll videos at all?
Furthermore up to now there have been a few anime released on streaming sites before and all of them were converted to a downloadable files. I wouldn’t worry about that ๐Ÿ™‚

Well, lets hope this is for the best for anime althoghether. If the animeproducers make money out of this, it’s only for the best and might help keeping anime alive.

Anyway, THANK YOU for all your work, Chihiro!

  • Maruno

@Lilith, yeah, I had a check since I wrote that, and only some videos appear to be American-only. Does anyone know why?

I’m concerned about the apparently worse quality of videos on CR. Not to mention the poor subs.

  • The whole Chrunchyroll idea sounds I little naughty illegal don’t you think.
Lets have a look They don’t offer licensed products they just distribute things that are not licensed until someone tells them to stop.
I wonder do the donation really goes the the anime producers as it says. in the donation window before download. the other problem is that when I download episode form their site and that anime get really licensed (by adv anime or Viz media whatever) will this copy on my computer be legal ? and stuff I will look deeper in that problem and may be wrote a longer statement for now I will be happy if we formed some kind of discussion here ๐Ÿ™‚

  • confused

it is unfortunate but oh well, not like its the first series to ever be licensed

  • lol

lol, i actually read some of the the stupid comments on crunch~*- whatever… its unbeliveable, this idiots
are even gratfull for that crap…. seriously.. WTF. Why would i love lame Streaming,
lame quality, (crap subs), …. ???

  • lol

oh not to mention, content limited to certain Areas /countries

Well however, im very gratfull for all the hard work ALL the countless Subbing-Groups are
doing to bring Anime to the non Jap ppl. Thank u very much!

  • mudduck

well i dont think its a bad thing, do we really need alot of people subbung one series???
this will just allow then to work on newer shows, but if crunchyroll screws up im sure they will stay on it, and as for the delay, we all are human, we get sick, things happen. dont stress out obout it. if they dont want to wait for the sub then let then go els were, i for one can and will wait for your quality subbing

thanks and keep up the good work, and your health

  • Roam

    Heil Chihiro! Quality over quantity!

  • i personally havent watched Skip Beat (yet), but it sucks that chihiro (just about the only fansub group i really count on, especially for R+V, as well as a few others) will no longer be subbing one of their shows…

and as for crunchyroll, i’ve visited their site before, its horrible… i cant stand streaming… but if worst comes to worst, then I can just rip their videos straight from their website >_>… and if needed convert them to avi, or w/e format i want…

Technically, what I’m trying to say, is you can always get it one way or another. although crunchyroll has crappy quality and subbing -.-, its better than nothing if there are no other ways of getting it =/…

  • Maruno

I hate that “it’s better than nothing” excuse. Sometimes it’s just not true.

  • Max_Otaku

Is Skip Beat even going to have more than 13 episodes?
Ureshii & Yoroshiku are still subbing it I believe even though they are taking longer to do it.
If the series is popular there will always be someone who’ll take the plunge.
Crunchyroll has crappy youtube video quality, it isn’t better than nothing, it is nothing.
As for licensing, I’m in the who cares camp, just because it’s licensed doesn’t mean I’ll ever see it and when the North American dubbers and editors get finished with it, it likely won’t be worth watching.
I can handle Japanese culture, I hate to see what happens to anime after some xenophobe in a suit gets finished with it, I prefer the media in it’s original context, which is why I watch fansubs to begin with.

  • Just went to CrunchyRoll. Watched opening of Saiyuki. There is no way I will ever consider Crunchyroll as a replacement for fansubs or DVDs.

    1. Video Framerate/Quality sucks
    2. Audio Quality Sucks, and due to it being flash, doesn’t play out of my 5.1 system.
    3. Cant play it on my tv, can’t play it without internet, can’t play it outside of browser.
    4. Ads popup over the video during gameplay.
    5. Ads before video.
    6. Can’t skip to any part in the episode easy due to buffering.
    7. No kareoke, no pretty subtitles.

  • lol

yes! very true, its just crap. For ppl to actually “Praise” that kind of “Service” its unbeliveable…

  • ObrokenO

Why don’t someone sub skip beat anonymous like “Teki” with shikabane hime. Even though funimation licensed it people still sub it.

Aside from that I don’t understand how people can watch any kind of video on stream sites. The audio and quality is just horrible. Even the fmt=18 option for MP4 format on youtube still sucks. O yea about naruto, please don’t sub that. It will fail hard and honestly it sucks.

  • Ant

Please dont do this! Cant you overlook this licence? Just this one!
There is to many people who wants this anime, think about how sad we will be ๐Ÿ˜›

Well thanx for the show and all the other subs too. I hope you and your team will continue or atleast think about continue the show Skip Beat.

  • leaveme

God damn morons they say they will sub it untill 13 read it
as for show nope crunchyroll dont have any license for it they maybe have agreement
    for subbing but nothing else

  • Xian

I’ve been a crunchyroll user for some time. The only reason i use it is to preview 1st episodes before actually picking up a series, and Skip Beat was one of them. Internet in my country is really crappy and i don’t have the luxury of waiting for a streamed video to fully download. Its really thanks to fansubbers that i get my anime quota filled for the week :\

If Skip Beat were to be dropped…that is one title out of my list if a good replacement sub is not found :\

    -Please reconsider your decision-

think of the little kittens that survive on Chihiro’s Skip Beat
