Skip Beat! is dropped… kind of

“I’m working with TV TOKYO to bring you the best anime titles immediately after broadcast! Starting January 8th, we’ll have the newest eps of Naruto Shippuden, Shugo Chara, Skip Beat!, and many other titles on CR with english subs for ppl everywhere possible (with some exceptions like Japan)”
– Crunchyroll

In other words, Skip Beat is licensed. Back in Chihiro v1, we did sub Geass, I know. However, our staff as compared to then is completely different, our subs are completely different, and we have a different outlook on things.

On the other hand, there is no indication as of yet whether Crunchyroll will be subbing the episodes that air until January 8th. As such, unless the situation changes, we will sub until episode 13, and then drop the show.

Also, no complaints of “Oh, their TL sucks! Oh, their timing sucks! Oh, you suck for dropping it!”, etc. We exist to provide subs to shows, not to out-do anyone.

Cruncyroll or Boost are just the beginning. They often give away poor quality “pro-sub” for free and make you pay better versions for download.
I myself bought Strike Witches for 25€.
I know anime are still quite expensive like that, but the prices will drop sometimes in the near future. We will gain better subs at better prices. That’s how really should be.
Fansub did its job well. Now it’s the time for 100% legal internet anime distribution.

are any other fansub groups subbing skip beat? please, i can’t bear crunchyroll..

  • leaveme

ureshi still does skip beat i hope

  • hitomi

first I’d like to say I agree with MV re counter-reply on Solaris’ comment…

and just want to say PLEASEEEEEEEE don’t stop subbing Skip Beat! ~begs~

  • Olia

it really makes me sad. that’s all there is to say

  • momiji

that really sucks i love skip beat
it’s the only show i watched subbed by you guys
i’m glad there are other groups subbing but they’re a little slow

  • icey

how many episodes does skipbeat has? if it has only 13 than is just fine lol
i hope that chihiro wont drop skipbeat, watching anime streaming really sucks.

  • z n 1

i think this is a troll

    nice try chihiro.

  • lju

Crunchyroll is alright, I watched most of Densha Otoko from them and they even had an H.264 encoded stream, the quality was pretty good. It was also free (just needed to register an email address.) If anime does start coming down the pipe on that, legally, it might not be so bad (as long as it’s still free and in hq.)

Thanks Chihiro, people should understand that “you gotta do what you gotta do.”

  • Duratrix

And the thing chihiro is gotta do is keep subbing skip beat!!! =)
    thanks for subbing it 😉

  • momiji

    there’s more than 13 episodes
that’s just the last number this site is subbing
i don’t know the total number, it’s not listed anywhere, but there’s over 132 chapters and it still ongoing and so far the anime has been following the manga so they’ll probabaly be over 50 episodes

  • luvn0t

ohhh nooooo 🙁 anyway thank you very much for your dedicationand hard work 🙂 love this site

  • phillip T

very sad to be told you only subbing up to ep13 and its been a very entertaining series,
and if you are going to sub naruto……don’t!!!!! its a piece of crap

  • if your going to sub something do bleach instead of naruto!

  • Zacora

O come on Skip Beat is awsome….why would you do that i mean come one SKip beat!

  • you're pathetic for doing this

Skip Beat isn’t licensed. It’s TV Tokyo that’s subbing the series, not an American company. It’s not even coming out on DVD. Streaming sites, suck period. They are low quality. I knew the announcement regarding this was going to cause problems for the fansubbing community. We’ll just have to hope that some other group puts out the sub then, so people can actually watch it in highquality, not crappy streaming. It’s really sad when people who watch fansubs would rather watch it streaming than see the actual show in good quality, the way it was meant to be seen. People like that, have ruined everything. If every fansub group drops their projects just b/c it’s subbed on some crappy quality streaming site, that’s really sad. I guess nobody thinks about the fans anymore. Great job caving to the pressure of TV Tokyo.

  • shad

just release the .ass can ? the video can be downloaded from other site anyway.

  • Solaris

Don’t worry ppl. I don’t mean badmouthing fansub. Fansub had its role, that’s advertising anime for the world crowd. Now even japanese firm became aware of the real potential of Internet as a distribution media and they’re spending money on it. This is quite right and I would like to praise it.
It’s not that fansub will die if streaming/internet anime will be extablished as a new distribution media. There’s always a place for it. Think about non english speaking countries i.e. or old shows. If your “guren lagan” was to be officially prosubbed, than the fansoub group could spend its resources to sub something else worth it.
Of course nobody is rich enough to buy all the media produced, but there’s still some way to manage it, right? You will always have your piratebay.com

  • Refe

I do hope you reconsider your decision to drop Skip Beat! I agree with many fans here that downloading HQ videos are way better than streaming the anime. I’m not saying that crunchyroll sucks or anything; in fact, I watched some series there, but it just can’t compare to the wonder that is HQ fansubs. 8D Skip Beat! also happens to be one of my favorite manga series so I want to watch it in HQ, naturally.

Whatever happens though, thanks for subbing it this far. You guys rock! (Please please please don’t drop? :D)

  • Krebmarkt

Waiting for Crunchyroll to disclose the detail of the deals.

    VOD ? Pay TV ?….

  • CodeGeass

    noooooooooo skippppppp beaaaaaatttttttttttt T_T

  • […] no, I guess that’s just way too much to ask.  At least Chihiro’s going on until episode 14 or so, so there’s something to look forward to.  Some might say that their subtitles […]

  • Boycott Crunchroll!! (JK)… 🙁 I’m gonna miss Chihiro’s fansubs of skip beat after episode 13. You guys are way more better, and translate much better. *pouts* couldn’t crunchyroll wait until the series was over!! >_<

  • Blue

Even know I am kinda mad/sad that you are going to be dropping it I won’t flame but will put in my two cents (even know I doubt you care.) Well then this is just to ask, since you are dropping Skip Beat does that mean if EF were to be lisenced then would you be dropping it also or no I mean I can understand it but still would you?

  • Cloudsora

You realize even though crunchyroll said this they actually make you pay if you want to dl them. It pissed me off so much. Just Saying

  • kyrissanean

So… this is sad news… I don’t know if crunchyroll will be doing a good job handling so many different anime… who is really doing all the work? Ugh!! This is going to suck… and I looked at their site and read all the legal jargon… eeeesh… what a load of crap… it will still end up on torrents, I know that, You know that… and probably THEY know that… come on!! P2P stuff will go on forever…

As for me… as long as I can download it somewhere… and the quality is pretty high… I will consider looking into crunchyroll in order to purchase episodes in the future… but that will be only after scouring the internet for “free” high quality copies…

…and there still may be some rogue subbing groups who keep the fans happy!!

  • Maruno

Now that Crunchyroll has said they’ve gotten Skip Beat, who’s now allowed to upload subtitles on CR for its episodes? Just anyone?

In that case, it’s perfectly feasible for you to crease an .ass file “for that purpose” and put it up here, along with a link to bittorrent the raw. Of course, you you would then not recommend programs like “mkvtoolnix”, just in case someone tried to combine the two and create a subbed episode for themselves.

    I’m just saying…

  • ze

CR was a good site, till they started to have all those whatnot services and cooperations with anime companies. Now it’s almost like they’re making money out of subbing.

  • strife_7209

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOES my sweeeeeeeeeet!!!!!! my dreams T_T waaaaaaaaaah T_T

  • Shadowlord

I haven’t watched Skip Beat, but somehow I don’t like this kind of development. Sure, finally watching anime in a legal way for free would be great, but I can’t stand the audio/video quality of all those streaming sites. I would rather stop watching anime than watch those eye-hurting-streams.
You can RIP most video streams out there and many media players can handle .flv files, but quality will still suck!

Sure, other groups will continue most shows dropped because of streaming and you can still grab those RAW files (and maybe even some .ass scripts), but I’m afraid that all this will make fansubbing and watching them even more illegal than it is now.
I’m fine with watching RAWs (Finally learning Japanese all those years will pay off, I guess), but I think it will get really crowded in some IRC-RAW channels.

If they can provide high quality streams worldwide all this would be great – but I doubt that this will happen…

  • TC-man

Maybe I should say something about this matter. Well, I don’t know how many servers Crunchroll got. But if there are many people (I mean hundreds or even maybe thousands people) who want to watch a particular anime show via streaming, would be problematic.

Why? Because if the Crunchroll’s servers can not cope with such amount request by people who want to watch a particular anime show (also don’t forget that other people want to watch other shows than you), means that the streaming can become very slow (unwatchable due to constant buffering) or even only a limited group people can watch their anime show at a particular time; the worst situation may be that Crunchroll will ask for a high price for watching an episode of the most popular anime show if it becomes a succes. Also who currently want to download an episode of an anime from Crunchroll have to donate. Well, if you have to pay, then it’s not a donation, right? Don’t get me wrong, paying for an download is allright, but the word “donation” here is too misleading.

So if you want to watch a new episode of Skip Beat!, you can’t since the streaming is very slow due to the great demand by many people who also want to watch Skip Beat or an other show. So, I think Crunchroll is not a real solution (at least not now). Also I think many people and Crunchroll itself under-estimate the situation and Crunchroll’s capacity (the servers). The anime series (Skip Beat!, Shugo Chara!! Doki, Naruto etc.) which will be broadcast via Crunchroll are very popular (and certainly if the service is for free), so it is very likely that the servers couldn’t cope with the big demand, which will lead to very slow streaming, or even causing the servers to become down/overload, i.e. in the end no one can watch their favorite anime show – that’s even more true if there’re no other alternatives.

  • MV

WELL i got an idea lets sub skip beat our self if you wana make a fansubing group add a comment bellow

  • shad

Ureshii is doing Skip Beat too, at much slower pace. They only finish episode 4 so far. If you don’t mind Chinese sub, dymy is doing it. I have access to watch legal copy of Skip Beat, but the subber is notorious for crappy subs I dun want to waste money and hurt my eyes on crappy sub.

Streaming might cause a problem for people living outside US and Canada. There are cases where these people could not gain access to the video simply because of their IP does not belong to these two country.

  • Jenny

    this really sucks ; ;

  • DOWN WITH CRUNCHYROLL

Guess what Dattebayo is dropping Naruto due to crunchyroll

  • Silverthorne

hope that Chihiro does not stop subbing Skip Beat. I prefer to get an anime and watch it at my leisure, not hope to watch it when someone else wants to play it.

  • […] Originally Posted by Man0warr Says who? Chihiro still subbing it. Hi Skip Beat is dropped… kind of at Chihiro […]

ANN is only listing up to 13 episodes though. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended at ep13 and had a second season, considering the trend of anime this season. Then y’all wouldn’t have anything to complain about =P

  • shad

one word for CR SHINE (die)

  • bbbsnsnsn

See, if this were licensed in the sense that we were getting real, physical R1 DVDs I’d be happy, and I would buy it. I buy shitloads of R1 DVDs.

But Crunchyroll? That shit is no substitution. Whatever complaints people make about Chihiro, they’re way better than CR quality.

This is a shame. Not because I’m a broke-ass whiny leech screaming “zomg license bawwww” like a lot of the people commenting above me seem to be, but because the better viewing option for Skip Beat is going to end, and it’s not even for a *real* license in the sense of a DVD release Just this digital bullshit.

Lame. I’d rather pay higher prices for a legit DVD release than pay anything at all for Crunchyroll.

  • Shelly

Chihiro, I think you’re doing the right thing. Ignore all these commenters. There will always be lazy people who complain about anything just so they have an excuse not to pay for something. Crunchyroll has HQ videos and I’ve watched series on them and was perfectly happy. Now they’re entering a partnership with the legal owners to bring us legitimate new episodes within a week or two of their showing in Japan. That’s fantastic news! I really don’t see what there is to whine about, except by people who feel they’re entitled to be spoonfed subbed anime while sitting in their highchairs.

Thank you for all your hard work in bringing us this series, and thank you for being ethical about stopping the subs.

  • Abhishek

This sucks!!..The news of you guys dropping the series has probably hit me the worst.Mainly because I am from India and we really dont get all the awesome anime titles on DVD,most of you guys get in the US…Yeah sure I could probably consider streaming the series, but strangely besides you tube no other video streaming sites stream as well…in other words streaming cant be considered an option for me(downloading is the only option). It would still be good if you guys reconsider the decision of dropping Skip beat…..But,then again maybe I shouldn’t have watched the series in the first place….well, anyway Thank you subbing this awesome series and for bringing it to fans who would have never dreamt of watching the series ever.

    Thank you so much ,Chihiro-subs!
[please, forgive my messed up english]

  • pupsia

eh… you at least get some animes on dvd in your country. i dont get any….
internet is the onely anime sorse i have… + i was sooo happy when i favorite manga was made into an anime.
this site became one of my farotites the minut i saw skip beat hear…
what to do next? eh….. *cry*

  • Old Computer

Hmmz… i tried out Crunchyroll website and watched the video posted there… i must say its kinda pixelated… not as good quality as one DLed … so like .. wtf 🙁

ow well i guess high quality anime is going to an end … shitty , but hey thats life for ya…

ow and also i saw that the TLs were marked as “Chichiro” does it mean your going to TL it for Crunchyroll ? im confused :S

  • Abhishek

    @Pupsia
    What to do next??

well we could just forget that the anime ever existed and just continue or messed up lives as before..

  • Cirilan

Well, I didn’t read this thread yet, and I imagine the shock this announcement made. But what of all the people who understand english and downloads fansubs like Chihiro’s because the anime isn’t licensed yet in their country so their downloading it is LEGAL.

I have an even more interesting question : what if Chihiro’s downloading raws from and to a server heberged in a country where the anime isn’t licensed, they sub it, and distribute it the same way. The people downloading it have a PC in the same country. There isn’t still any license. My point is : doing all this isn’t illegal. Heck ! I download anime because they aren’t licensed where I live. I’m not a pirate, am I ?

  • […] this blog, let’s get down to baka-bizness.   And that group that I was talking about was Chihiro-Sub.  They plan to subbed up to Episode 13 and then they’re dropping the series.  Not gonna […]

  • Paula
