is it just me, or does anyone else notice the squares in the episode where the japanese lettering should be instead.

It takes more than patience when it is over a week later than the mkv. Just admit someone forgot to do it.

Thanks for subbing.. LOLZ.. lost my highspeed internet.. stuck with dial-up for the moment. It’s a pain trying to download anime on dial-up. Takes about a week to download 2 anime episodes.. and well I’m currently watching Gundam 00, Shikabane, Index, Yoichi, Bleach, Gintama, Hitman, Minami-ke, Shippuuden, Soul Eater, and Druaga. Needless to say I’ve had to put most on hold till I finish off some of the short series.. :'(
Is it possible to leave a direct download link for xvid or avi version after you have released them? That’s because somehow the torrents just don’t work or start for me.

After watching same series animes done by chihiro and other groups i respectfully ask:
How much “artistic liberties” is chihiro employing in their translations vs other subbing groups doing the same series of an anime?
I still dont know enough japanese to figure out what the characters are saying
beyond small word associations like “Banchou” is it really “bad ass” or does mean
“delinquent, bad, outlaw, criminal, gangleader “?
I dont really like the interpretations of groups like Dattebayo because they are obviously embellishing bleach and naruto with their own “Colorful translations”.
I did like Chihiros work on Rosario s1 and s2.

“Banchou” means the leader of a delinquent group. It should be translated as “Boss”, I guess
I appreciate that Chihiro is doing them, I just don’t appreciate being classed as a second class citizen and made to wait over an extra week to get the xvid. If they don’t want to do the xvid that is fine with me, they are easy enough to convert, hence my complaint about the long delay.
And I am writing in this thread cause the one I was writing in was OFF THE FRONT PAGE and was obviously being ignored. And anyone who doesn’t like it is welcome to go screw yourself.
Look, it should be obvious by now that they get to XviD after h.264 pretty much always and since they have stated their case for not having the XviD out as fast there isn’t anything more to say, now is there? Unless you are going to continue to bold-facedly bitch and whine at the people doing something nice for you with no requirement to.
I just don’t get all this animosity directed at fansub groups who put their XviDs online after their h.264 files! Most fansub groups create their h.264s before the XviD for one simple reason… it’s really easy and fast to do so.
The video is ripped to a file in h.264 format directly from the TV by the RAW creators. Why h.264? Well, most cable and satellite broadcasts are encoded as MPEG2 or MPEG4 video using either h.263 or h.264 encoding. The RAW creators then distribute this file on FTP and BitTorrent for the fansub groups to pick up. The fansub groups then transcribe the script and translate it into their target language. The translated script is then timed and typeset. The result is a subtitle file (.srt, .sub files, or some other similar format), which after quality checking, is then attached to the h.264 file within a packaged .mkv container. Because the video isn’t being transcoded (converted into a different encoding format), it only takes a minute or two to build this .mkv file. The fansub group then plops this packaged file onto their IRC channel, FTP server, or BitTorrent tracker for everyone to download. They do this because they don’t want to keep their main core of customers waiting.
Now comes the difficult part. The packaged .mkv container, holding the video file and the subtitle file, is sent for transcoding. The subtitle file is digitally merged with the h.264 video file to create a hard-sub (a video file where the subtitles cannot be turned off because they are now part of the actual video). This merged file is saved as an XviD .avi file. This transcoding process takes lots of time for the computer’s CPU to render and output. As an example, 25 minutes of video can take up to 2 hours to flatten and transcode to XviD on a 2GHz dual-core Intel chip, depending on the pixel size and bitrate of the original video file. Once completed, the fansub group then puts this file online alongside the h.264 .mkv file.
Within fansub groups, different people take on different roles. One person may do the translation, while another does the transcoding. Not all of these people may be able to work on a particular project (episode) at the same time, due to work or family commitments… therefore, some stages of the project may take longer to complete. If there is a delay in the publication of the XviD, it probably because the person doing the transcoding is missing or busy with something else. They do this work out of the kindness of their hearts, and for the love of Japanese animation. None of them get paid! Go easy on them, and please remember to say thank you when the files arrive.
It’s also worth remembering that Chihiro is one of the best groups doing fansubs. Some other groups refuse point-blank to encode video as XviD, and others can’t even be bothered to put their stuff on BitTorrent. Thanks guys!
Putz, if you think we intentionally are delaying XviD, you can go jump off a bridge. We will release it as soon as it is ready, end of story. Unless you want to make h.264 watchers (The majority of fansub watchers) wait up to an extra week to watch the episode, this is the best and only way.
David B., kind of sort of. All anime is MPEG-2 that we work with to begin with. We also get them on PD and Share, not torrents or FTP. Also, we don’t encode from the mkv to XviD.
Basically, we take a MPEG-2, encode it to a lossless format, and then go from that lossless to the h.264. Then once subs are ready, we mux into the h.264 and release. We then go back to the lossless, tweak it a bit for res and filtering and stuff, and then hardsub it into XviD format. It prevents the blocking of h264 compression from compounding in XviD, so we just get a single compression instead of two.
@Kristen No, I’m not saying you are intentionally delaying it, I’m just saying you aren’t giving it a reasonable go. I have a friend who takes a standard FREE programme off the net, takes an MKV format file, dumps it into said programme and in an hour or so it produces a perfectly acceptable Avi file. If he can do it in under two hours and he doesn’t sit there monitoring it, why can’t you?

It isn’t like I’m even watching ZKC, I don’t watch a show till I have all the episodes. So a week or 10 isn’t going to be a bother to me, I just don’t see why it takes Chihiro over a week for something that can be done in a couple of hours if you have your MKV.
And as I said before, I don’t care if you don’t make Xvids anyway, I can always convert my own or simply watch the mkvs on my media PC hooked to my TV in the lounge.
What I don’t understand is why you’d bother doing blueray rips of a cartoon. It isn’t real life and no matter how much “better” it looks it isn’t worth it.

When you encode an h.264, you can UL it to the server. People DL it, and then mux it, and then release it. The UL can occur at any point in time, the DL/mux/release is when the script is ready. In other words, the encoder does not have to be on.
So, unless he’s staring at the computer screen for 24 hours a day, he won’t see the script until some time later. Then take into account encoding time, and the fact that I was on vacation and couldn’t release it, and that most encoders do more than 1 encode a week and prioritize XviD encodes lower than new encodes, and what do you get? The delays you see.
And then you get people like you complaining over us having a real life.

that just converts the VIDEO format, it doesn’t change the video its self, ie it doesnt add subtitles to each 1/24th second, which is exactly what chihiro fanSUBS does.

I was only making a generalisation to illustrate a point to those people who whine a lot. Some fansub groups do have their own unique methodology, which Chihiro obviously do… but I have seen others do it differently depending on what type of RAW they get hold of, and what kind of facilities they have at their disposal. Each time you transcode you risk loosing some detail somewhere in the video or audio time-line, so keeping it to a minimum is a good thing.
It’s nice to see that you do some tweaking for resolution and filtering when hardsubing the XviD … the small .avi file size with no apparent loss of picture/audio quality is much appreciated, especially for those of us who have to transcode it again for playback on small screen devices such as iPhones.
Please keep up the good work, and try not to let those with a negative viewpoint get you down.
PS. Have you though about turning on forum comment approval in your blog software? It could help you weed out the overly negative posts, while allowing legitimate questions to be answered publicly in a civilised manor.

Honestly the mkv format is a hassle on low power cpu but i’ve grown to like it for a number of reasons: quality, file size, audio and easy to upload most of the mkv’s im uploading to megaupload go up in 3 mins as opposed to 1.5 hrs for avi/mp4.
This is the future guys, dvd is on the way out so all you guys still needing avi/mp4/mpg will not need to burn dvd’s anymore.

I suppose that someone has told you this already, couldnt find any comments on it though. The “chapters” (or whatever its called, you can skip to them while playing etc..) in this episode was a few seconds off, gets you a bit confused when you skip the intro. Doesnt really matter though 🙂

@Helixcs I’m not lying. I don’t watch the show till it gets fully released. I have loads of old anime still to watch that is complete so it isn’t a hassle to wait unlike those who whine about how it isn’t available minutes after the raw is released. What I was saying was if a programme can take an MKV with subs and create a perfectly acceptable xvid in a couple of hours WITH SUBS why not simply use that.
As for the blue-ray argument, I’m simply saying it is a waste of time given that it is a cartoon and can’t be any better quality than the original picture. It isn’t like you are going to see the age lines on a person’s face or the blades of grass in a field. Its a cartoon FFS.
Putz, your argument hinges entirely on the timeframe in which the XviD that you download comes out in. Once you aren’t watching it with immediacy after each episode comes out you no longer have anything of a valid argument because it doesn’t matter to you if the XviD doesn’t come out for even three weeks save for right at the end when it will all be released- especially for something like that second-class citizen comment. Even if you are squirreling them away until such a time as the series is completely subbed, you’re complaining about when something comes out that you won’t even watch until somewhere like a magnitude of time later- this is pointless, stupid, and invalid.
You may currently be giving advice on how to release faster, but if they want to, say, release good quality stuff rather than hastily thrown together shit, then they are well within their rights to do what they damn well please on their own time.

Because I encode the old ZKC episodes, someone else encodes the newer ones. I don’t get the delay of releasing a realizing the script is done that other encoders do, since I release and encode them.
I still don’t get what you’re trying to accomplish. Faster XviDs will not be happening because the delays we get are human limitations. And frankly, considering the Blu-Ray comment when the subject obviously was not about Blu-Ray, I’m now beginning to think that you’re a troll that should be blacklisted.
@Kristen I obviously don’t know what you do to an xvid that is any different from an mkv. Personally I don’t see the difference in what you encode in an xvid compared to what I get if I convert one of your mkvs. When there is no obvious difference what point is there in the extra 7 or more days delay when they can be done in two hours? The entire point of my original argument.

Having said that, I still do appreciate the fact that people at Chihiro put in their own time and effort to sub these animes as I appreciate other groups that also do it.
