Answering some questions…

I’ve seen a lot of the same questions asked around here over and over again, so I’m just going to take a few minutes to answer a few of them.

Q) Will you sub ________________?

A) Most likely, no. We already decided what shows we’re doing next season. We probably have more resources than you, too, so we’ve looked at every possible show. Maybe if you want to talk cash, we can negotiate some sort of deal, but… 😉

Q) Where is episode __ of _____________?

A) In progress. Keep in mind that we have lives. We’re real people who go to work and school, and some of us even try to have friends and relationships. This is something we do in our free time. Not to mention, it’s insulting to ask people who are doing this for free to hurry up. We do keep track of the projects we’re working on, so it’s unlikely we’ll forget something completely. Chances are the staff for that project are busy or having technical problems or something of that sort.

Q) What is moe?

A) Go watch Lucky Star.

Q) Why is my font size huge (or) why doesn’t my MKV show subtitles?

A) Make sure you’re using a supported codec pack. We suggest CCCP combined with Media Player Classic. The one thing you must never do is use VLC. If you are using anything other than CCCP with Media Player Classic, we will NOT help you with playback. If you are on an OS other than Windows, we recommend Mplayer. Just as long as it’s not VLC.

Q) Why do you sub shows when other groups are already doing them?

A) Look, there are a billion fansub groups and only a limited number of series. We’ll sub what we think looks good regardless of who else is subbing it.

Q) Where’s my XviD?

A) Dunno m8. This has always kind of been an extra service. Starting next season we’re not going to provide XviDs on all our shows, though. Instead, certain shows will replace the XviD with a hardsubbed 704×400 MP4. Basically, you still get the compatibility that XviD lovers cry about, but you get the improved quality of H.264. And if you can’t play SD H.264, especially hardsubbed, I think you need to get a computer that wasn’t built in 1999.

Q) But XviD is smaller than H.264

A) No it’s not. It’s smaller because the resolution is smaller than the HD H.264 files. When you have an XviD and an H.264 video at the same resolution, the H.264 version will either be smaller and the same quality, or the same size and higher quality.

Q) So you’re not doing XviD on any show next season?

A) We never said that. It will be left in the hands of the encoder as to how they wish to encode their series. As of now, we have 1 series that will have an XviD, 1 that won’t, and 1 that is undecided.

Q) What do you guys do in your free time besides fansub?

A) We furiously wank it to Cardcaptor Sakura movies

just out of curiosity .. 0_o…
why not never use VLC ???
i m using Linux and using either Mplayer or VLC . Excet if the windows version has something special about it 😮

  • maniac

oh asking all the question made me forget my bad manners 🙂

Of course it’s YOUR free time and we are VERY HAPPY AND GRATEFUL you re doing this for people like us (good or bad – u know what i mean 🙂 )

Personally i ll say this 😀
    THANK YOU CHIHIRO!! 😀 😉

  • xmichaud

    I’ve got another important question!!!!

Can we give you a hug!?

Too bad people still don’t understand etiquette. Love your subs!

  • So we finally have a FAQ now.

  • Miranda

Another stupid question: Why won’t the subtitles stay on-screen when I pause? (to read notes and such things), I have only ever noticed it on your subs while other softsubs work just fine.. I should point out that I’m using VLC (because I’m on a mac and there aren’t any good substitutes..)

On a side note: I <3 Chihiro!! Thank you for being awesome.

  • Fatz

Give me bank acaunt to transfer some money 😉 I have in mind some shows 🙂

  • @Maniac You shouldn’t use VLC for HD or high quality files…it doesn’t do a good job of reading the file and creates distortion of the video that you see…an example would be, the video would freeze for five seconds and the audio would continue. I think it has to do with VLC not being able to play files of ~250 MB or more because its too much information for VLC to read through.

the two players that come with CCCP, Media player and Zoom player, play them fine. I actually choose not to install Media player because it wasn’t for me. Zoom player is configurable out the wazoo and plays EVERYTHING except DVDs, so i’m fine. I play 1920 by 1200 video files with no problem, and they were 2 GB in size (the naruto movie that DB released)

And Chihirio, most of us here understand you are human beings, so keep up the good work, but first and foremost, live and enjoy your lives.

To me its, an episode gets released when it gets released. No point in complaining.

  • lordvivec

Cardcaptor Sakura remains one of my top 5 animes, and always will. It is beyond good, it’s godly. If you haven’t seen the anime, find it (and AVOID the god awful English dubs)

You guys do a great job, especially for a free service. Keep in mind those who cry about wanting an episode are from that generation below us with contains spoiled wanking twats. Ignore them, or ban them for kicks.

Keep up the good work, and keep the loli coming! (oh lawl I did say that 😀 )

“A) We furiously wank it to Cardcaptor Sakura movies”

    ….STOP WATCHING ME DAMMIT!!!

  • I suggest Perian if you’re on mac, its an awesome codec pack, you can watch your vids on quicktime, they look great too, no shitty rendering like vlc either

lol, we have something in common!

  • maniac

I m on Linux Matt so i m either using Mplayer of VLC, Of Kaffeine too :p 😛
No problem for big files here though 0_o
Must be Windows VLC problem 😮

  • JackBassV

Just for your info, the following version of VLC beta – vlc-1.0.0-git-20090306-2305-win32- plays nearly everything I have perfectly. I’ve come across a couple of incompatable file (Kimagura Orange Road ep 3,5 n 7) which just wouldn’t play – can’t work out why. )

Haven’t tested newer versions, cuz this one is really good (it actually installs and runs on Vista64!)

It plays Angels Egg (ogm + vobis) without any problem. One complaint, still doesn’t like split open/ending files. It just ignores them. but who watches the credits anyway^_^

w000t! thanks for the mp4 low quality! now I can finely watch all shows of you without seeing those little squars 😛

    I fekkin knew it :O

Here is a question: WHY not making X-vid for the mkv files? I personally like them better bcause the size is much smaller(half at least) and it work better on amy system….10x 4 the hard work. Chihiro, but many people awaits 4 the xvid version of any realease, so why not do it? plssss..

  • JackBassV

Matt: I’m using Vista64 with VLC (as you may notice above.) The solution is to drag the slider back to the beginning and let it start again. Always works on mine, and I have some HD movies that are over 1 gig in size.

BTW, I’m not involved, with VLC, just need to play movies on systems where installation of codecs aren’t allowed (Thank you portableApps.)

PS:I prefer the Cardcaptor Sakura series. (just gonna read the manga again^_^)

  • lazygeko

You guys rock. One of my favorite subbing groups.

  • luigimario

Hi guys, thanks a bunch for everything, I also don’t understand ppl who complain, ITS FREE!!!

anyway, just a question about the proposed MP4 releases, will they play on PS3 without having to convert? That is the main reason I download the Xvid versions. Otherwise I may have to figure out how to install VLC on PS3 Linux! (and I REALLY don’t want to do that, but I guess I will regardless, just for those occasional mkvs).

  • Klaus_1250

If you are using anything other than CCCP with Media Player Classic, we will NOT help you with playback.

Media Player Classic Home Cinema edition is not supported? Seeing it is the most actively developed and growing in popularity, I find it somewhat odd. Technically speaking, with MPC-HC, you don’t actually need CCCP or other codec packs.

  • bakka

i am using cccp with media player classic but sometimes it wont play a file when it should and sometimes it takes like 10 min before it works, i have the newer ver of mpc but it still uses the older ver can someone help me?

  • Soichiro

I’m editing in more stuff to counter the arguments presented herein.

  • Soichiro

    Specifically:

If you are on an OS other than Windows, we recommend Mplayer. Just as long as it’s not VLC.

    and

    Q) But xvid is smaller than H.264

    A) No it’s not. It’s smaller because the resolution is smaller than the HD H.264 files. When you have an xvid and an H.264 video at the same resolution, the H.264 version will either be smaller and the same quality, or the same size and higher quality.

  • mX

    3 more questions :p

    1. why do you guys wanna drop xvid? the replace ment can it be played on a DVD-player (my opinio keep the Xvid :D)

    2. why do you guys hate VLC?

    3. everyone who’s working for chihiro, are you guys all from japan?

  • Soichiro

    1) Because it’s becoming outdated, the same way DVDs are. Now everyone has a PS2/3 or Xbox 360 which can play H.264, and DVDs are being replaced with blurays. We’re just trying to keep up with the future.

    2) Because it has terrible support for softsubs, among other things. Basically, it doesn’t play stuff the way it’s intended to because it uses its own built-in codecs instead of the proper ones from whatever codec pack you (might) have installed, and those codecs like to mess stuff up.

    3) No, most of us are from Europe or America, actually.

  • Death The Kid

soichiro are u from shinsen- subs? XD

  • Sturmwind

my f*cking dvd player is to retarded for mp4 or mkv so some more xvid plz ^^

  • Ippo

About time you guys work towards dropping XviD.

  • @ JackbassV “Matt: I’m using Vista64 with VLC (as you may notice above.) The solution is to drag the slider back to the beginning and let it start again. Always works on mine, and I have some HD movies that are over 1 gig in size.”

So, if the video becomes distorted, the person is to go back to the beginning again? Wouldn’t that just be a waste of time and encounter the distortion again?

I haven’t used VLC in a long time, i use Zoom player which is 100x better. I just use VLC for taking snapshots of the video.

  • DmonHiro

Alright, I’m going to be nice for once and answer some questions WITHOUT insulting the one who asked. At least I’m going to try.

    1. Why do you want to drop xvid?
Because then encoder does not want to do it anymore. And we see no reason why he should do something he does not want. Note that the encoder for series X might not want to do xvid, so he won’t, but the encoder for series Y might not mind, so he will do it. I don’t want to see “But show Y has xvid, why not show X?”. Because they have different encoders.

    2. But xvid is smaller then h264.
No it’s not. Read the post.

    3. But a lot of people are waiting for the xvid.
    What is your point?

    4. Will the mp4 play on a PS3?
    I have no clue. Honestly.

    5. Why do you hate VLC?
Because it has horrible softsub and HD support.

  • Kristen

mp4 should play on PS3, yes. I don’t have a gaming system, just a PC, so I can’t say for sure.

  • Ippo

If mp4 plays on both the PSP and PS3.

  • Northlander

If any of you so desperately want an Xvid version, go get AlltoAVI and convert it yourselves. You may have to convert it twice if the original is a h264, but that shouldn’t be a problem unless you download a thousand shows a day.

  • confused

thanks for the hard work chihiro, on a side not there is one decent substitute for media player classic and thats gom player. now i’m off to leech some cardcaptor movies from somewhere.

  • unkind

Zoom Player + CCCP actually works just fine for everything, never had a single issue with it and any video file.

  • lmg

Since no one has ask this then allow me to be the first idiot to ask : what is your subbing price?

  • Yay

Chihiro already has my eternal gratitude for doing MariMite 4th. So whatever they do or do not do, I don’t dare nor want to criticize. 😀

    Thanks for everything. \o/

  • Ayano

    Jay for .mp4 release =D

  • Tenchou

I really like your fansub so keep on it the way you like ! You are the best fansub for me !
I found this fansub with Ef a Tale of melodies , And I’m really thankfull with that series you did! thanks a lot and i am waiting for the next eps that u r doing in Blue Ray Discs so take your time enjoy your life and make people like us have some fun watching good anime that you’ve worked subbing in ! Thanks a lot for everything !
    Arigatou Gozaimasu! hahaha .
    😀 :D:D:D

  • talyx

From experience, if you’re using a Mac, and it’s an Intel based one, use Perian and the QuickTime player, all of Chihiro’s subs to date will play back fine. If you’re PPC and/or sub 1GHz, try VLC or stick with AVI if available. VLC is not nearly as horrible on the Mac as is it on Windows, and is actually a great fallback for older, more obscure codecs (on a Mac anyway.) Mplayer is also a good fallback on the Mac, but not maintained as well (IMO).

  • talyx

Oh yea, and be sure to use the latest version of VLC on the Mac (older ones have sub styling and mkv handling issues) and Perian is at perian.org

Since no one has ask this then allow me to be the first idiot to ask : what is your subbing price?

LOL, I don’t know. Something you probably can’t afford?

Let’s see… Each DVD costs $60-$80, there’s 6-8 per series so that’s $360-$480 for buying the DVDs, plus a $30 subbing fee for each episode, so somewhere between $720 and $960?

Since we obviously sub for fun and not for money, we will charge overly expensive prices so that nobody would be tempted to.

  • luigimario

$60-$80 per DVD?!?!?!??! That’s MAD expensive!! You guys need to find another supplier 😉

Dattebayo subs do subbing for cash, there rates are crazy though, it would be cheaper to take a japanese class and learn the language.

So thanks for all your hard work (and I’ll keep my fingers crossed for PS3 compatibility, or else I’ll have to use All to Avi)

(one thing i find strange is that all the Xvids you do work no problem on my PS3, only the Asu No Yoichi has to be run through All to Avi, just curious if you have any idea why that is, not a big deal, it takes 5 mins to convert, just curious)

  • Soichiro

Wow Kristen, with that money we might as well go license the shows, lol.

And $60 is the average price of an R2 DVD with 2-3 episodes. Anime DVDs are ridiculously expensive in Japan, and the american DVDs have crappy reencoded video and either horrible dubs or horrible subs.

  • $60 to $80 a DVD? you’re getting ripped off. Hell, i’ve paid HALF of that for original subbed content for an ENTIRE series. You need to find another supplier.

  • lmg

you guys wrote it, so i thought i might as well ask.
just out of curiosity kirsten, what contry are you from, since you understand japanese?
either way i look forward to your releases.

  • Myranti

For those using Linux you may like to consider SMplayer, which is a front end for Mplayer, but is contained in a single window with some extra buttons aside from the play/pause/stop/etc. It can also remember the place in files that you’re at as well as volume/etc.

  • Analytical chemist

Thanks Chihiro for your effort so far. I’ve been watching your series since ef- a tale of memories. And I must say: “You’re one of the few fansub groups whoim subs are basically standard “.
Hope you can go on like this forever, even though the facts remain that are far less anime fans in the 30-40’s than the mid 20’s

  • Analytical chemist

BTW, I use SMplayer as well, It’s indeed highly recommandable.

  • A thousand bucks for a show? That sounds reasonable. If you figure how much it costs most companies to do it, that’s a steal. Hmmmm, I have a couple of shows in mind.
@Analytical chemist: I started watching anime in my early teens and am now in my thirties, still love it. The reason you don’t see a lot of people in their thirties and forties watching anime is because it was not as widely available when they were younger and that is when most people get addicted to this stuff.
Thanks Chihiro for doing what you do. Dropping AVI is a good thing, I made the switch to MKV a while ago and with no regrets. Thanks for keeping up with the times. You guys (and girls) rock!
