Ritsu catches swine flu and Mio goes to her house for lesbian sex to care for her. Soichiro’s prayers are not answered! (Soichiro: Mio sucks. It’s no good unless it’s a 3-way with Mugi, Yui, and Ui.) (I hate you guys, you’re so dirty and you don’t pay the characters the respect they deserve. T_T -windstar)
h.264: FUCKYEAH LESBIAN SEX
XviD: .
@Ortix some of us are on Mac. >_>;
NO Chihiro! Don’t give up on Xvid yet!!!! You’re doing a fine job with the xvid version too!!!
Well, sunday is just around the corner so I can wait til then. I’m a mac user too…
Is lesbian sex the cure for the swine flu? I had no idea…
*bathes self in pig’s blood*
I’M READY LADIES!
“XviD: XviD is a stupid codec that is just as playable on all computers as h.264 of the same resolution, takes more filesize for lower quality, and doesn’t support ordered chapters. Download the h.264 or wait until Sunday.”
^ this is bullshit, and flat out wrong. My old PC could not handle h.264 with the same settings as XviD. If you don’t care about people with old computers, so be it, but don’t make up crap like that.
LOL THE HEADLINES xDD FUCK YEAH CHIHIRO!!!
I like xvid because a lot of dvd players out there play xvid/divx, some also support .sub and .srt sub files. And xvid is also easy to convert to dvd video(for dvd players that do not play data dvds or cds) with nero.
Ortix Says:
sigh… people still don’t get it. I give up. I’ll just go out with one bang:
USE CCCP, USE MEDIA PLAYER CLASSIC (HOME CINEMA), USE MEGUI TO CONVERT, FUCK XVID.
There you have it.
What a MAROON! (Classic reference to Bugs Bunny in case you didn’t know.)
@Lake:
Care to explain why i am a “MAROON”?
@Ortix:
While he used flaming words and I won’t, you have made a fatal flaw in your reasoning. That flaw is that not everyone uses Windows.
BTW, fix for 64-bit Windows users, tried and verified: You do not need CCCP to play MKVs with ordered chapters. THE FIX: get ffdshow and the Haali Media Splitter (google them). I’m running Vista Home Premium 64-bit, and have ffdshow tryouts rev 2832 (March 28, 2009) installed (64-bit codec). Haali only comes 32-bit and won’t work with 64-bit Media Player Classic, it works with 32-bit Media Player Classic though, and also works just fine with 64-bit ffdshow. You’ll know you’re not DOING IT WRONG when you see the Haali tasktray icon show up (if you’re like me and hate extra tray icons, there’s an option to shut that off in the Haali config, which installs to the start menu). You’ll also know you’ve achieved success when the OP and ED automatically play.
Hope this helps other 64-bit folx.
Man, this editor sucks. What? It’s kureshii? Well, no wonder. She’s the worst person you could _ever_ choose, srsly. Yeah.
tl;dl: kureshii sucks balls.
*tl;dr
See? Her editing affected my ability to type without error.
I prefer the DIVX release over the H264 not because it’s the much superior H264 codec but because it’s in .avi. that means it’s watchable on my 360 which has an excellent upscaler. My computer is in no way capable of outputting HD so if i try to watch it, it skips horribly, and end up watching the DIVX anyways.
AniRena is up since now.
Server died right when I was at a convention (how akward when shit happens when your having vacation.. -_-)
Anyway, it’s working properly again after consulting server provider.
Whether is Mkv or Xvid, it does not matter….. Avi is faster to convert to other format than Mkv….and do you notice that the fonts on Mkv is always larger and different kind of font to Avi???
Do not quarrel over this kind of small matter……
Some of us still need XVID or AVI version…..
Just Wait….
Thanks Chihiro!!
Actually from what I see, XviD has sharper edging, which makes it look better than h264. It also feels like the audio would sound better, but that’s probably just because of my preference. So if I’d do anything, I’d drop h264.
I don’t know what traumatic issues you have had with VLC, but to me the player doesn’t matter at all, only using XviD would’ve also saved me the trouble of downloading CCCP to go with mpc, but that’s the smallest of problems.
anirena isn’t down anymore
Myoukochou and everyone else who uses Xbox Media Center : TVersity. You seriously can’t say you watch anime through Xbox media center, when you could use TVersity to stream it. YES, you can stream .MKV’s and they work o.O
^HyuGarona. Your comment is the most retarded thing I’ve read in a while. Drop H264.. keep XviD.. omg seriously.
Is it not a matter of preference? I don’t see my comment “retarded” in any way, and I’m just telling of my own experiences :/
If people like h264, then there’s no reason to drop it, but the same goes for XviD. I’d only hope that both codecs would be released at the same time, because making XviD watchers wait 2-7 days is honestly frustrating. It’s up to the people in Chihiro 🙂
okay i give up… people just DO NOT understand what i’m trying to say… so i will say it one more time…
h264 is superior. You cannot say that xvid is better. Period. Now if you DO NOT want to wait for the xvid… it is obviously faster to download the h264 version and ENCODE it. I wrote out a humangous tutorial on how to do it with MeGUI for excellent quality. MeGUI even has freakin’ one-click encoding.
http://ortixdesign.com/video/megui-the-converting-powerhouse.html READ THIS. Instead of waiting 5-7 days, download megui, and use that.
Also, CCCP works fine on x64 vista. I run x64 vista and the only thing that is different is that i have to open the 32bit explorer to get the thumbs generated. Other than that: perfect. And opening the 32 bit explorer is easy. I just “explore” through a 32 bit software.
Yes, but you’re retarded to say XviD looks better than h264, and that the sound quality is different. While in reality, I never noticed different in audio, and it definitely does NOT look better.
Haiz…..just wait for a few days…..it won’t kills to wait for a few days…..
Both should keep…..
if you want to watch it first, download MKV first……
I will wait for the AVI…..
Thanks, subbers!!!
I don’t care what codec is used as long as I can watch it and enjoy it. Sure smaller file size is great, but at the same time, a 1TB hard drive, exclusively used for storage, and a fast internet connection can go a long way.
At any rate, I stick to h264.
Also, xvid may be helpful for those who don’t feel like tweaking MPC in Windows 7. CCCP was installed, yet for the longest time, Windows 7 would not show subtitles. Finally got that taken care of though.
@Ortix, thank you and I did notice the tutorial and I thank you for the help, I will probably use MeGUI.
@Distrance, all I can say is that maybe your senses of sight and hearing have rusted. Or am I hallucinating which causes me to at least see better quality? Nevertheless, only XviD causes it then 😀
Wow. So much tl;dr, and yet, I did anyway.
Thanks for the tutorial Ortix, I’ll take a look. I could probably use it to convert HD YouTube vids to avi too right?
EVERYBODY STOP YELLING GODDAMN WHAT IS THIS I DON’T EVEN FFFFFFFFUUUUUUU-
srsly, we know some like h.264. we know some like XviD. Half of this thread is people repeating what other already people said before. Each format has their strong and weak points.
Agree to disagree or GTFO.
Go argue at cg.
fucking /thread
Oh, almost forgot: WE LOVE YOU CHIHIRO!!

@crossed:
You can convert to xvid yes with megui. It’s pretty sweet. I explained everything in the tut. If you have questions, you can comment in the tutorial.
I quite happily watch 1080p MKV, I love Matroska. It can be a bit bleeding edge at times but it’s flexible in ways nothing else has been. Variable frame rates, ordered chapters, correct rendering of animated subs with embedded fonts but with buffering so that it doesn’t hitch or skip when the subs change—not to mention good H.264 encodes (and honestly, AVC is a much better video codec than ASP, that’s by design because it’s more complex).
The drawback is simply that all the added flexibility .MKV brings to the table is tricky to implement perfectly, and the anime community was, and still is, the first main early adopters of this. Add on top of that that very small things like XBMC may never decode H.264 properly, they may well just not have the oomph. I’m still experimenting with the perfect setup (currently I’m playing with the current CCCP betas, because I like the bleeding edge, but be aware it can be rough at times—good, very smooth, things are coming though).
It’s fine to play on my computer, but it’s troublesome to transcode to that quality, it really is, especially in realtime (note that for example, support in mplayer/mencoder for ordered chapters is finicky, but if you get the right patches, it’s doable). I do plan on setting up a DLNA media server (definitely not TVersity, a good one!) which will do everything including transcoding to XBMC or Xbox360 at some point, but regard it as a major project as to get playback perfect I may well have to submit some code patches. So be it!
I only care ’cause I want to watch the anime on the TV with my friends, rather than on the monitor, and at the moment, we’ve only really set up XBMC for that. 🙂
…until then, however, since I’m lazy, someone can just do the transcode for me and we can torrent that like always, since that’s essentially what the xvid release is.
Thank you for it anyway, Chihiro! *hugs*
1080p mkv, where ? Afaik most, if not all releases are 720p and/or 480p. Im not talking just about Chihiro, but in general.
@Distrance:
I have only download 1080p if availalbe. Most of the stuff is released 1080p… check boxtorrents. They have the animatrix in 1080p. Uber awesome.
I hope the Xvid one goes out now!
1080p is usually used on Blu-Ray (usually with very high bitrate H.264 @ L4.1). Do yourself a favour and see if you can pick one up. It looks pretty good, especially on sharp sources like anime.
However, it can’t be broadcast using current systems as far as I know—the bitrate needed is too high currently, so we won’t see it in broadcast. 1080i is possible, however not done as often as people would like, even on HD channels (“upscales” are prevalent, which are not much better than a good media player upscale, or at least, if they are, then we need better media players! *grin*).
With appropriate postprocessing on sources like anime, it’s possible to reconstruct the 1080p from 1080i because of the framerate, but deinterlacing on something like that needs to be done very carefully, because for the ~1-2gig release you’d be looking at, you’d want to be pretty sure it’s perfect so there’s no v2. Especially because of variable frame rates.
And many computers would be highly stressed by it; hardware acceleration would be the way to go (although I do use DVXA right now, so that’s already here!).
Can’t see 1080p taking off for fansubs. The raw quality really isn’t there, especially on some broadcasts. 720p is more practical for the moment, until the codec crown is taken from H.264.
I’m sure much better compression is possible, doubly so for anime sources which contain tend to sharp line art, gradients, simplex and parallax pans and other translations, and rather distinctive movement patterns—that’s something that lends itself to better transforms, better movement estimation, much better handling of colourspaces than decimation/blocking… Right now, however, H.264 is pretty good, and the trouble with a more complex codec, as everyone’s discovering with H.264, is that it often has higher decoding requirements, not to mention it taking years to optimise a decoder or tweak an encoder well.

I used CCCP, but the video don’t match with the audio(the audio seems to be running with the time just fine, but the video is like slowed), used VLC, they’re running the same but hangs periodically(like trying to match up the video and audio), same with Kmplayer.. so, I’ll wait for XviD.
I have this same problem running H.264. I even have a fairly high end computer, a 2.4 ghz Intel with a gig of ram, though I have only a 128mb video card, and still the video lags behind the audio. I use CCCP with Media Classic Player as well.

you see the problems of video geting slower than audio is not a problem of the encode.
actually its a problem cause by less system memory.
so i recomend to close any other background programs while runnng it ( like fire fox , and the irus guard, these two eat so much memory ).
I had the same problem and after I do this I can play the files with no problems at all,
I’ve tried doing this as well, removing as many running programs as I can, and still have the same problem. My solution has been to use a comverting program called Super (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html). You have to navigate through several pages to finally get to the download page, but it works very well. I think it will even do PSP and other mobile formats. It can also batch process several videos at the same time as long as you use the same settings.
some people just don’t know how to keep their computers clean. I wanna bet that one every single computer here whose users claim that it can’t handle h264 has some sort of cpu/memory hogging application. Probably a virus or something.
pls. don’t drop the Xvid >_<
Ah yes I can finally drop the Xvids
thanks for the xvid release
lol at the link
Kokoa!
thanks Xvid releases….
even too small to click it 🙂
Hey guys, could you help me out in this one? My problem is that I would like to download h.264 versions of all k-on episodes, but whenever I h.264 videos to .mp4 so that I may play it on my ipod classic, the subs are being removed. I am using xilisoft video converter ultimate and I also have pspvc. What should I do? I just downloaded .avi formats of the k-on episodes that I wanted but I read in here its file size disadvantages that’s why I would just like to use h.264. Any help would be surely appreciated. thankyou.
Another question is, why is it whenever I download these h.264 sometimes I can only play the first 3 minutes of the episode and then it loops back to the beginning. I am using VLC media player. And whenever I play it on wmp it plays all the way but does not contain subtitles except for the opening part.
@ticktock:
well im not pretty sure abt it, cause me myself tried on different MKV files with different programs to change it to Xvid, well wht i faced was that the video gets converted perfectly, however ya the problem was in the subs, but not the normal subs of the episode it was the typesetting ones, u know like translated ADs in the streets and such or translations noted in the top of the screen….it just gets screwed when it goes into *avi container with Xvid compression, im not sure how to fix it….maybe some1 here can help u out…
another thing i just watched the Xvid version, i just wanted to make sure the ‘Preview’ in the ending was like cut or something or was it to be intended that way…just wanna make sure…thx for the release anywayz
@Ortix
the convertion guide you made is awesome. it converts the mkv to avi perfectly but its not including the subtitle. any help here would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve tried this on a completely clean OS and it still does the same thing. I’m thinking it has something to do with the Intel processor because I didn’t have any problem when I was using an AMD 3400+ processor.
Lol. The obvious problem for not being able to handle h264 is simple. ( Assuming by meaning not being able means that it lags ). Your video card and/or memory amount and/or processor sucks.
Even with my previous PC, h264 anime and videos lagged so that video and audio went out of sync, and i tried this after clean install of Windows, but the problem was there. My previous PC had 2GB of ram, some intergrated video card that liked to use my ram as it’s video memory, and 3.0Ghz P4 processor. In my case, it was most likely the video cards fault.
Also, anyone who uses VLC player and complains something doesn’t work as it should = DO NOT USE VLC. VLC uses outdated codecs and they can not be updated. Apparently CCCP is outdated aswell, but CCCP is far superior to VLC. If you want something that’s updated then get FFDShow and whatever player you desire. But seriously, don’t use vlc.
@Distrance: Ah, but CCCP, in fact, uses FFDShow…
As for the lagging problems: If you got a too-old machine, you might try to install the CoreCodec. Yes, it does cost money, but those who are capable of using a search engine will stumble across leaked versions (this is, if you’re too stingy / too broke / whatever to shell out a moderate amount of cash).
With CoreCodec-on-Haali, even a prehistoric machine like a P4-2.4GHz with Intel Onboard graphics should have no problems with 720p mkv encodings.
@mad eye moody
I see, so what could be causing this? why is it when we convert h.264 mkv files to mp4 the subtitles get lost? I tried converting to other formats and still the subtitles get lost.
but the thing is, i converted the 2nd opening vid included on episode 9 to mp4 and the subs where there, so what is going wrong when I convert the whole videos?
@Ortix your tutorial is cool but you said “I’ll be using Chihiro’s K-On! episode 11” and you used ep 9
thanks for the release
