To Aru Kagaku no Railgun – 01 Blu-ray

TV versus BD

Hi JC Staff! We want to thank you for you complete incompetence in making a Blu-Ray.
Blu-Rays are 1080p. So why do you upscale them from 720p?

720p only. We’ve gone over the scripts again, used the 2nd karaoke for the 1st OP as the OP karaoke,
redid the ED, and put it onto Blu-Ray.

Torrent: Kuroko!!!

No mercy for HDD space I see? Well guess what? I don’t care! This is RAILGUN, motherfuckers!!!! Worth it!

  • DmonHiro

Btw, you should really consider adding an “edit” button to this site.

  • Subaszek

Thank yuo so much for the release!
Btw, is it just me or the timing in OP is a little off?
Well it doesn’t bother me, just wondering.

  • eehreum

face 720p-alm. thanks for your work!

  • Subaszek

Sorry for double post, my mistake. Something with my PC is screwed. Now it works fine.
    Amazing work.
    Once again, thank you

  • eehreum

@DmonHiro. this is pretty small for blue ray cuz JC Staff failed. blue ray 1080p can be like 5x this size.

70 dollar bluerays should be superior to tv rips in more ways than just being able to physically hold them \(>_<)/

  • Your60GBdriveIsSad

Wow, I’m always surprised to see people still complaining about files being too big. It’s 2010 people, stop using floppy disks and buy a bigger hard drive.

  • wait

    Thanks for the release 🙂
But there’s one thing I can’t understand, what is the purpose of using lossless audio when the video isn’t? Correct me if I’m wrong but if I’m right the video for episode 01 is 236 MB while the audio is 112 MB, for me that doesn’t make sense.

Simply because lossless audio (at least 2 channel audio) doesn’t take up that much space. Lossless video, however, takes up a ton of space. The 720p lossless video for episode one was 12.3 GB. Fortunately, x264 is smart enough that it can compress all that into a 236 MB video stream without significant quality loss.

  • h_rayz

    Bigger HDD??
I have over 2TB in my main system (and about 1.5TB more distributed about my house on the “lesser” systems.)
I also must burn about 25-40 DVD’s per month to keep up with DL amounts as the drives are all full!
I love the quality here, but JUST buying more HDD’s isn’t the answer…
(ps: BD single layer 25GB discs are Way too expensive yet, and they are changing the standard to 33GB/layer soon [old reader/writers will NOT work] and dual layer BDR’s are nowhere to be found…)

  • My solution is an LTO-4 tape drive for backing up. Each tape is $30 and can store up to 1.6 TB compressed (1.2 TB is more realistic for compression).

I do a monthly backup and can delete the oldest files to save space.

  • soo

So there won’t be a real 1080p version for this?

  • FiSSi0n

LOL noob! I have over 4TB in and attached to my system alone (all mirrored RAIDed on 1TB HDDs (and all 90% full)) and 1TB more on other devices. Gotta go all the way if you got the love man!!!

j/k about the noob part btw (but not the storage space – I really do have WAY too much anime -_-)

oh and thx for the release Chihiro!

  • Chris

Does the BL version have any differences in content? More fanservice, etc?

  • Havoc10K

perfect picture for the post XD

  • Kristen

There’s less steam in the shower scene. There may be other changes, but that’s the most noticeable.

  • soo

this episode won’t open. downloaded it 2 times. op + ed works perfect.

  • motz

    i have the same problem

  • Anon

No news on K-on!! yet then?

  • John

I noticed that the OP and ED downloaded separately for this episode, while they didn’t for the non BD episodes. Did you use ordered chapters on the BD but not the normal ones, or is my computer just messing with me?

  • Nazo

@John, yes ordered chapters were used for BDs
@motz & soo, if you use VLC, don’t use it. Otherwise, it may be the FLAC decoding that is the issue (off hand I don’t know how to fix that, it’s probably in your CCCP settings if you use it), but I know it definitely works since I downloaded the files myself off of the torrent. If you use VLC… don’t use VLC >_>

  • soo

i hate vlc. im using k-lite codec pack and i’m able to watch k-on bd rips and EVERYTHING else, only this episode fucks me up. so nothing wrong with me ;D

  • Nazo

@soo, I can play the video files fine on two different computers using CCCP, so there’s nothing wrong with the videos themselves. It must be something in your settings, or something.

  • Soichiro

Check the CRC of the file you downloaded and make sure it matches the CRC in the filename. If it doesn’t, you probably have a corrupt file and need to redownload.

  • soo

    How to check the crc?

  • soo

thanks, my file isn’t broken. i tried to open it in vlc and then vlc is fixing it. it says something about subtitles. it still doesn’t work with mpc.

  • v1: [6B774195]

    Thank you very much!

However, there are a couple of (perhaps intentional?) errors in the subs, which warrant a v2 for the batch in my opinion.

13:32 — “For the nonce”… should be “For the moment”…
21:15 — “Certes.” is certainly wrong, but could be worded “Yes.”, “Indeed.”, “Quite.” (depending on how posh Kuroko is), or “That’s right.” (which is what you used in the TV) .

Size and quality are very good indeed: it’s a shame about the 1080p, but it looks to me (and did throughout the run) like the show was actually done in 720p rather than downscaled and upscaled.

Also, the ‘correct’ lyrics for the OP are (apparently) “Looking! The blitz loop” not “Look in the prism”, and on very careful inspection that *is* what is actually sung—but I could forgive you for that one, as it’s nonsense Engrish of the highest order so a good case could be made for saying fripSide got it wrong! 🙂

  • Nazo

    @soo
I use CCCP+MPC and it works fine.

    @Myoukochou
“For the nonce” = “For the moment”, just no one uses the former
    “Certes” = “certainly/in truth/truly”, just again, it’s archaic.

So they aren’t wrong… just… not normally used.

  • Hotel_Moscow

for some reason its not working with mpc

  • soo

Like i said. It’ BROKEN, FIX please

  • Soichiro

It’s not broken because 99% of people can play it just fine. Uninstall K-Lite and update to the latest version of CCCP.

  • Hotel_Moscow

wasnt the last version of cccp released in 2009 like september of 2009 and if thats true then this should work and its not

  • soo

    yeah, september 2009, rofl.
my k-lite was released in March 2010

this file is broken. admit it. my vlc can play it, too. but only after fixing the file.

  • Nazo

Here’s the thing (and I’m not the encoder). I’ve tried multiple times with no problems:

XP Pro, VLC 0.94: no issues (it didn’t complain about needing to fix anything) other than ordered chapters, but that’s an issue with VLC itself
XP Pro, VLC 1.0.5: same as above
XP Pro, CCCP+MPC from sometime in 2007 with vanilla settings (yeah, no CoreAVC): works fine
XP Pro, CCCP+MPC-HT from sept 2009 with vanilla settings (yeah, no CoreAVC): works fine
Windows 7, CCCP-HT from Sept 2009 changed to use DVXA: works fine

I don’t do encoding nor do i tweak around with settings and stuff. One thing that I did do was to install the FLAC decoder separately, but I don’t know if that makes any difference.

But regardless, asking for a fix when we have no idea what’s causing it doesn’t help things. Unless the encoder knows what’s causing the issue, how can you expect it to be fixed? When it works on other people’s systems, it makes one wonder if there is something wrong with your settings. If there is nothing wrong with yours, then it means that everyone else must have this magical fix that allows it to work on theirs.

One thing you could try is to play the main episode without the op and ed in the same folder. Maybe ordered chapters is messing you up or something.

  • Soichiro

I don’t know what’s causing the issue because it works just fine for me. You can go into your ffdshow settings and make sure it’s being instructed to decode both H.264 video and FLAC audio. If that doesn’t fix it, I don’t know what will. It’s obviously on your end because it plays fine for everyone else.

  • Hotel_Moscow

idk for me its the main file that doesn’t play but the op and ed play

  • soo

I can’T even extract the FLAC from this file. It’s completely messed up.

  • Haro

Hi retards! I want to thank you for you complete incompetence in not knowing who encodes the Blu-Ray. Blu-Rays are not mastered by the studio itself. So why do you blame JC Staff for that upscale?

  • Soichiro

I think Haro works for JC Staff. He sounds really butthurt. I don’t know why an ordinary leecher would be upset about us blaming JC Staff for not mastering their blurays in true 1080p. Oh well. Guess I probably shouldn’t feed the trolls.

  • squall0833

    no way,
I’ve total 6TB internal and external HDDs

still not enough for me to put those anime in,

gonna get a new one for later release animes…

  • Beforan

@soo FYI, I was having the MPC playback problem with the episodes, but not OP and ED. I use Win7 and K-lite across the board here at home and no machines would play it.

However after reading comments here and fiddling, seems to me that it is FLAC with ffdshow; in my config on every machine ffdshow was NOT decoding FLAC.

go to ffdshow Audio Decoder Configuration in the Start menu, and in the “codecs” section head down to “FLAC” and change from “disabled” to “libavcodec” and voila, MPC plays nicely with FLAC.

glad I solved it now, cos I’m getting me that 1080p K-ON! XD

  • s1lence

    @ Beforan

Thanks for the help. I changed the setting as you instructed, and now everything works well. I knew there had to be something wrong with the decoding on my side, but for some reason I didn’t even consider the possibility of it being FLAC-related as my FLAC music files play just fine.

Thanks a lot. It’s people like you for which I am grateful.

By the way Chihiro, looks and sounds great! Thanks for the release! Out of curiosity, were the opening and ending encoded with FLAC? I was wondering because both of those worked just fine before updating my settings.

  • Beforan

@s1lence no problem, once i figured it out i was hardly gonna keep it to myself knowing that other people had the problem 😉

yeah i was wondering about the OP and ED too, since they worked fine /shrug

  • squall0833

    haha,

    @Beforan

Thats what I’m looking for, now episode works, I never know FLAC was disabled by default in K-lite codec,

now i can play To Aru no Railgun BD rips.. thanks!!!!

    😀

  • squall0833

    owh,

Another little problem, if you play entire video without dragging timeline, when it plays the OP/ED linked files, it causes video delay (0.2-0.6sec),

you need to touch/drag the timeline, video track will be back to normal timing to match the audio track

video delay happens when it starts to play OP or ED, which is pretty weird to see slower karaoke

    (using K-Lite Mega Codec Pack)
It’s not a big problem to me, I’m just wondering if anyone has the same problem.

  • kache

I was wondering: the 12GB lossless video was uncompressed or compressed in some lossless codec like YULS?

  • Beforan

@squall0833 yeah i got the delay, i guess it’s some mess up with linking in the way k-lite configures haali compared to the way CCCP does, but to be honest, it’s so minor I can’t be bothered to look through haali configs.

could be worth noting for future releases with FLAC though, in case it becomes common. Or of course we could be told to just use CCCP cos that works :S

All my other linked files (essentially chihiro releases) are fine… but i haven’t finished grabbing the k-on blu-rays yet, and they’re FLAC with linking too…right?

I have over 4TB in and attached to my system alone (all mirrored RAIDed on 1TB HDDs)”

You really aught to do your research before you provide false information.

If your raid configuration is set to “mirror”, then you have 1TB storage, with 4 drives mirroring the contents in case one or more drives fail, the raid can rebuild itself upon installation of replacement drives… however, if you were to use the “stripped” configuration, then you’d have 4TB’s of storage, though it would be incapable of rebuilding the raid should any one drive become damaged.

  • Fred

This is just a minor thing, but when Mikoto throws Kuroko out of the shower, her words are translated as “You’re already broken!”

To me, that doesn’t really make sense. What she actually says is, “Your brain is already broken!” My Japanese teacher taught me that in order to break something, it has to have a function. I think this definition of 壊す is a good one.
機能をもっているものに障害を起こさせる。To cause an obstacle or impediment to occur in something with a function.

It just sounds better because the brain’s function is to help one think and make decisions so it makes more sense if Kuroko’s brain is broken. Also, “a person is broken when all their hopes and dreams are shattered and they feel like they have reached both their bodily and spiritually limit.”
