Japanese Earthquake

As you are probably aware, Japan was hit by a magnitude 8.9 earthquake today. While it is a tragedy, I am just glad that it struck offshore and killed hundreds instead of in the heart of Tokyo and killed millions.

Since we do not need donations until June, we want to try to raise donations for aid of this. Any donations before the end of the month will go to the Red Cross. Please read above to help. If you’re from a fansub group, please consider expanding this to your site.

In other news, Madoka 10 will probably be canceled on TBS so we’re looking for a .ts of 10 from MBS or another station (not the low quality 180 MB one I saw yesterday, a real one). Found one

    My prayers goes out to those who are stuck and in the midle of it.

    DAM NATURE, YOU SCARY!

  • Maye

    I share the feelings, sadly, I am unable to donate.
    I’ll just spread the word.

  • soo

    it.s 8.8, not 8.9

  • Celestial Indigo

    People are still forgeting the following Tsunami that is devistating the Pacific Ocean, especially small Island nations like Tawain, Guam, etc. Not to mention the impact it’s having on Hawaii and coastal North/South America…mostly North though.

    But still, our hopes for perservation go out to the people of Japan and prayers that they get the problem in the Nuke plant solved quickly to prevent problems in the area. Two radioactive cities is already 2 too many. Three could cripple the country especially being so close to Tokyo.

    Neither Nagasaki or Hiroshima are radioactive so I’m not to sure what cities you are referring to…

  • Ryona

    @soo: you n00b. Go google it again.

  • Celestial Indigo

    There may not be AS much radiation there now as there was upon the dropping of the bombs, but there are still enough trace amounts in the area that still cause sickness to others NOT use to the area. Radiation from Nuclear bombs last in the area that they go off for an estimated 10,000 years. If you’ve looked at some of the photos I’ve seen of Bagdad after the US bombed them years ago, you would agree with me on the Radiation issue. Families mutated, underdeveloped/mutated newborn children, and this is YEARS after the first attack on them from the US when Bush Sr. was in office.

    The US never nuked Baghdad…

  • Shadow

    ::scratches head::

    The US nuked Bagdad in the 90s?! Must have been all covered up by Bagdad Bob, cause I’ve never heard of it.

    Best wishes to all in Japan in getting through this!

  • Laevantine

    Celestial Indigo = weird troll. Ignored.

    Luckily only around 1000 people (so far) from miles of land taken. Plus, the U.S. delivered coolant for the nuclear plant so that won’t go off. Hopefully Japan can recover quickly. Disasters are inevitable but doesn’t mean we can’t do what we can to help prevent the brunt of the damage. All in all a good response from Japan in the wake of the destruction.

    Strive on Japan.

  • ene13

    It’s not a troll people, during the first gulf war, the US used uranium tipped missiles when they bombed iraqi defenses, resulting in radiation exposure of the public. It wasnt that large scale though. Anyways, I am sure the spirit of the Japanese will not be broken by something like an earthquake. keep fighting!

  • bob

    Ah, no those where depleted uranium. Huge difference, we also have the same stuff in our tanks and bullets. It is used for the density of the material, the radiation is negligible for the most part.

  • stevethapirate

    Wow, I hope that the damage isnt as bad as it has looked. Are there any people in the staff for Chihiro that were near the regions hit? If so I hope they are alright and relatively unaffected. Hopefully whenever they can get back to a regular-like lifestyle they can continue fansubing. But obviously their safety and rl is way more important. Hope yall at chihiro are okay.

  • soo

    @Ryona

    You should google that. I’m right, you’re not.

  • Mickrocrivers

    IN ANY CASE, let’s hope that those at ground zero of this catastrophe (wherever they are) will make it (and we say our condolences to those lost, for what it’s worth). Donate if you can, pray or be mindful of them if you cannot. That’s all anyone asks.

    Mickrocrivers

    PS. To Kristen: Not exactly the best way to put it at the beginning, but it’s also the truth in retrospect, so I’ll shut up about it.

    > I am just glad that it struck offshore and killed hundreds instead of
    > in the heart of Tokyo and killed millions.

    Actually, I think the opposite would have been better. If the quake happened inland, there would be no tsunami (or at least not much to speak of). Also, Japan’s buildings are the most quake-proof in the world, right? I think they’d be able to handle an earthquake better than the current tsunami.

    No, not really. The strength of the quake as it hit Tokyo was estimated at 5.0, which Tokyo could handle. An 8.9 is ridiculously powerful and would have destroyed large portions of the city if the epicenter was in Tokyo, even with Japan’s quake-resistant structures.

  • Goodwine

    If you lie about the destination of donations, Kona-chan won’t be happy
    I’ll donate what I can for Konata’s sake 😀

  • Densebrains

    I just want to ask what is this Kesenai Paypal?

    Before I do donate I want to know where this money is going? How come the Paypal account is a gmail account?

  • Ren

    Deaths related to the earthquake itself are low because of the quake resistant buildings but nothing is going to stop the tsunami. As tragic as this event is, relative to other great earthquakes/tsunami’s such as what hit Haiti and Polynesia, the death toll is much lower which is fortunate considering how densely populated Japan is.

    Also, lol @ troll talking about Nagasaki, Hiroshima and Baghdad as though they were radioactive wastelands.

  • @Densebrains Yes it is!
    Because we initiated the campaign in a short time we had to use the only available paypal account we had for donations, and that was an account we made a long time ago with my personal email. For any problems or questions please address to us at mgt [at] kesenai [dot] net .
    Thank you for your support!

  • fenix

    The largest strength that hit hand was a 7, the tsunami did most of the damage.

    However with all this nuclear reactor hubub that’s going on, all the ignorant people are freaking out. Don’t they teach that present day reactors don’t explode?

  • bob

    The reactor was built in the early 70’s. And it did just explode. Kinda: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2316390

    what the fuck is kesenai and why you suggest donating to them instead of donating to red cross directly?

    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
    ^ This.

    I call scam.

  • Soichiro

    Everyone calling scam reminds me of idiot Youtube commenters. “This video is fake! It must be photoshopped!” Look, we’re not stopping you from donating to the organization of your choice, but we’re not about to lie about helping people after a natural disaster in order to make money. In the words of nobel laureate and purple heart recipient Kamina, “Who the hell do you think we are?!”

  • Fanofde4ever

    @soo-
    Why don’t you google it, and look past the first link? There are only 2 saying 8.8. All the rest say 8.9.

  • name

    1. stop allowing luffy to steal everyone’s money.
    2. is 8.9 on the richter scale, or the more localised version Japan uses?

  • […] “If you’re from a fansub group, please consider expanding this to your site.” – Kristen(Chihiro Subs) […]

  • soo

    @Fanofde4ever
    only the stupid americans are saying 8.9. check the japanese news, dumbo.

  • Fanofde4ever

    @soo
    But you said to google it, so I did. Since google doesn’t agree with you, and I have a screen shot to prove it you’re changing where I need to confirm it? I think you need to provide some proof of your own if you actually think you’re right.

  • Confused Otaku

    come on, 8.9 and 8.8 is not that different D:

    that 0.1 difference really won’t change anything now T__T

  • soo

    @Fanofde4ever
    If i google Justin Bieber and the results say he is cool, is he really cool then? You have to find the right sites, the JAPANESE news.

  • Fanofde4ever

    @soo
    You’re the one that said to google it Jackass.

    “@Ryona

    You should google that. I’m right, you’re not.”

    Have you forgotten that already? Now since I can’t read Japanese I’m gonna read the sites I can, and almost all of them say 8.9.

  • soo

    Yup, and 8.9 is wrong.

  • Confused Otaku

    http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011年日本本州岛海域地震

    according to my interpretation of googletranslate, it says the initial magnitude was 7.9, but revised to 8.1 -> 8.8 -> 8.9 -> 9.0 -> 9.1

  • Axlen

    One way to help Japan is stop making BD/DVD rips of their anime available here. If you really love anime, support the industry and Japan and get your kick for Crunchy, Hulu, etc., or buy the disks yourself.
