Re: Nastiness

EDIT – Kanade: You wanna know what’s stupid apart from mangaslide who’s super stupid? Japan didn’t even ask for help yet. All our donations haven’t been reached yet. Talk about doing something without thinking first?

UPDATE: “Japan has requested what looks to be limitedย foreignย aid. So far, that call still seems to exclude several nonprofit aid groups (like The American Red Cross).”

GIZMODO reports…

http://ca.gizmodo.com/5781182/did-your-donation-really-reach-japan-probably-not

——————————————————————————————-

Update – I received some data to further say this thing isn’t a scam. It was donated to an outside collection with the same purpose (proof below) since Japan’s red cross has closed off donations.

Income 1Income 2Income 3Income 4Income 5

Outflow

For anyone who wants to donate to the efforts to help the Japanese, here is a direct link to the Red Cross donation page for the tsunami relief effort.

So there’s some nastiness flying around in the scene, and I just wanted to write a bit about it.

I was linked to this today: http://mangaslide.org/

If what is written there is true, it is definitely nasty. I’ve removed the link to the paypal and stuff just in case it is. There’s a link to the red cross above, so go and donate on that.

But, I think that this is a very nasty attempt to put our circle of groups in a bad light. Please open the post to read a bit of a rant.

First, here is a copy of the E-Mail I received about putting this up.

Hello,
Many of you know me as Luffy of Kesenai Subtitles, however a six month ago I left Fansubbing to concentrate my work in promoting the Japanese culture in Europe.
Anyway, many of you have seen what happened to japan the past 12 hours, and we could help them by rising a fund to help the victims. Fansub groups have the possibility to ask for donations and I’m sure that fans will respond to our request.
So if you can post on your website a request for donations, would help us unite the community of fans, for this cause.
We decided to redirect all our donations from 11-31 March to Japanese Red Cross Society.
If you want you can post this quote in the post:
“Our thoughts go to Japan, in these very difficult moments. And to help them along with you, our donations of 11-31 March will be donated to Japanese Red Cross Society.” – Mirko Muresan President of Kesenai Non-Governmental Organization

How will we do this?
If you already have a PayPal/Moneybookers account that you use for fansub donations, then request donations on it. If you don’t please redirect them to Kesenai/Red Cross, donation pages.

——————————————————————–

So my first thought is “If this was a scam, wouldn’t he have just said ‘link this page’ instead of ‘request donations on your paypal'”?

So then I looked at the google link put in. That post has apparently been deleted since it was made, so I can’t get the full thing. But read the full thing. E-Mail, then “We are no going to pay this to some random person. This is just a scam.” There’s three scenarios here:
1. This was posted by a member of that forum, talking about the donation drive. This obviously would then just be his opinion that it is a scam.
2. This was posted by the person with the paypal himself. Then it leads to the question, why would he call the Red Cross “Some random person”? I can’t come up with any.
3. This was posted by somebody pretending to be the person with the paypal. This continues with the nastiness.

Honestly, I see no hard lined evidence that this is a scam. Besides, they’ve reported $1200 in donations. Scammers just don’t do that. They pretend nobody’s been donating.

I feel it’s quite terrible that some groups would try to pervert a good cause for the silly fansub war that they’re engaging in.

I got one word for this; Bitchassmotherfuckingmancunts. That’s all.

  • Webster58

It would be nasty scam: /
Hopefully here in Poland we have public initiative to raise some money for the Red Cross in Japan.

  • Fanofde4ever

    @Someone
    I’m guessing you stopped before-

Luffy himself said he was gonna buy transport streams from the donation money, so what’s at issue here?

Link it and I’ll remove this post.

  • Soichiro

Why would he need to BUY transport streams anyway? It’s not as though most of the groups on the internet (probably including Kesenai) don’t already have free access to transport streams.

I mean come on, you’re trying too hard.

  • Someone

@Fan, haha, I did happen to misread that part. But still, how fucking backstabbing is it if it were true; Using people that are actually willingly giving up their hard earned cash for the sake of this disaster for their own profit. I’m sure a large part of the people reading this agree.

  • Someone

Besides, may I ask why Chihiro put up this donation service instead of the official Red Cross one? Not that it’s not noble and awesome that you’re doing this, but I mean.. It reduces the risk of it being a scam, you know?

  • Anono

Someone @6:23pm has a very valid point.

  • Perplexing

I mean no disrespect to Chihiro as I, amongst others enjoy the work you do, however I too have wondered why an official red cross link was not present. I hope that this was not a scam but as far as I am concern when you donate to something of this magnitude it should be done through official channels. Just saying.

On a side note I do appreciate seeing Chihiro stepping up and trying to help. Out of the 8 groups I follow only 2 are doing something about this. So thank you Chihiro for taking action ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Goodwine

I’m glad I couldn’t send my donation yesterday xD
I guess I can try again at the real place.

  • Ani

I’m just confused as to whether you are saying this (fairly obvious) scam is nasty, or the people calling it a scam are nasty?

As well, every time you state your own opinion, something horribly illogical follows. No offense.

Either way. If we got scammed, that’s nasty. But the people calling it a scam are nastier. Especially since they have no basis at all to call it one.

  • Warll

You mean people were actually donating through Chihiro? Even if this wasn’t a scam paypal would take an extra cut,. A fool and their money is parted yet again. I’d be outraged at chihiro for purpetuating this yet I really don’t think japan needs donations. If you are willing to donate let it do some good, there are tons of nations in need which happen to be not first world wealthy.

  • Someone

“But the people calling it a scam are nastier. Especially since they have no basis at all to call it one.”

ILU2, so much for supporting Chihiro.

  • Kanade

People really have a lot of time to write up shitty stuff. But yes, I do agree paying to subgroups directly can be ambiguous because you really do not know how much donations they REALLY got. They could have kept a percentage. But yes, I do agree not having a direct link to an official sponsor isn’t right. Maybe we should do just that.

But as fansubs, we’re only trying to bring the fansub base into donating and not scamming people.

  • MogMoogle1

It’s hard to say whether or not it’s legit, but if there’s a way to pay directly, why not do that than through the middle man? If it really is a scam, shame on them. Also, not Chihiro or any other fansub group’s fault, they were just out to lend a helping hand.

  • Kanade

BTW, mangaslide, you can go fuck yourself in the ass. No-one needs to hear you rant. This is a free world, we do what we want. You can go rant on how stupid Obama is or how Justin Bieber is fugly, but we don’t care. It’s the heart that counts.

Oh btw, what you say isn’t 100% true too. Why would readers trust what you have say? Who are you to us? You’re just another nobody trying to get FAME from posting shitty comments about other groups TRYING to help.

The world doesn’t need people like you. GO AWAY!

  • deeeeeeeeeerp

    sure is kanade mad

  • Someone

I think he is. Dont piss him off now, youll get into big ass trouble. ๐Ÿ™

  • NekoZabuza

Personally I think he he wants to show he is really legit he should

A: Not have all the links at the bottom of the page link directly back to the from page

B: Show the receipts from HIM donating the money to whoever it is he is donating to and give proof that it is a legit company/Charity

C: In case no one noticed the banner/logo at the top of the page says “supporting International Medical Corp and Save the Children.” NOT RED CROSS.

D: I just added up all the donations on the page (and I’m 99.9% I’m right) and it comes to a total (with all of PayPal’s fees deducted) of $1321.52 (USD) so far. so IF this IS a scam….that’s how much he has made so far.

  • Zero

I’ve used paypal before and i’ve known they have a fees for nearly all transaction.

beside, if you’re in usa and you donated, wouldn’t you want a receipt for your tax form that you donated? the more you donate, the less you have to pay?

and i’ve already paid. but it more easier if you make those donation directly to Red Cross since they’re more liable to ensure the money is properly used without any hidden fees of charging your cards.

  • chaos_blue

    I agree with Zero.
A direct donation to the Red Cross is ultimately the best solution since they are one organization that will put the money in good use directly with no steps in between.
Still, it is also valid that from “the fansubbing community” it would have been a good sign if they would have sent when they donated say $2000 in one transaction (or more). Most logical way of raising that money would then have been by using the channels they already can use (this case PayPal) to raise money.

That other people are skeptical and/or know a better way of channeling the aid (in this case the money) so be it.
That is what I’d call human nature.

  • name

The thing about the kesenai donations is luffy might give the money directly to japan red cross, as opposed to an outside organisation.
…Or he might keep the money.

  • Charles

No good deed goes unpunished. I’m sure you did what you thought was right, and if it backfires through this, please don’t ever let it change you from always trying to do what you believe is right. The unkindest cut of all is to be accused of wrong-doing when your intentions are the opposite. Tthose who are so quick to jump on a misstep are the ones who never find the time for an act of kindness towards others, random or otherwise. So to hell with them, and good for you, Chihiro. Thank you for all your good work.

  • name

and since mangaslide only seems to read this blog and not her emails, kesenai the subgroup isn’t kesenai the “NGO”.
ruri the subgroup is kesenai the “NGO”.

  • Stefto

can’t say i’m suprised that they haven’t asked for help yet, Japan was Issolated until 1600 (if i remember correctly) after all.

  • PaleBlue

You always have to be careful when big disasters strike. Many people that would not ordinarily donate any money, influenced by the images of destruction and suffering, become very generous. However, in almost every case there are a small number of people that see all this free money pouring out and decide that they want to get some for themselves. It happened during the Indian Ocean Tsunami, the Haiti earthquake, Hurricane Katrina, and it’s happened during many other disasters. The only way to be sure that you’re not getting scammed during a time of crisis is to only donate to charities that you trust and are familiar with. It’s much safer to donate to new, small charities in times of peace and quiet.

  • OniSamurai

I’m not quite understanding why people would actually donate to a person who is “supposedly” going to donate that collected pool to the right organization. How the hell could so many people be so stupid as to not donate directly to the organization? It takes 10 clicks of the keyboard to head over to the real site. You people are just too fucking trusting, ESPECIALLY to people over the internet.

Hopefully ALL that money gets donated though. God knows they can’t Photoshop an image an e-mail receipt to give the illusion that it was all donated though.

They are scum if they actually scammed the donaters, but we can’t feel all too bad for people who would openly hand over money like that. And any of the fansub groups who participated in posting the link are just as foolish.

I’m not sure who or what mangaslide is, but I’d rather they bring something like this to light and make people more aware of how they stupidly throw around their money than sweep this incident under the rug.

  • CDP5280

IDK, but it seems to me that Japan doesn’t want any help form foreigners.

  • reaper527

    from the link:

“But even if Kesenai ‘NGO’ were a legitimate organization, it would still be a terrible idea to donate to them due to the fact that they only take donations via PayPal. This means that PayPal takes a small cut of every single donation. In other words, your donation money will not fully go to help, a corporation will take a small cut in-between. This is why I recommend making a donation only via direct means like a credit/debit card or a bank transfer.”

what? no comment on kesenai’s legitimacy, but something tells me that whoever wrote that article doesn’t realize that credit cards have fees on every transaction as well.

  • what is this...

lmfao, are the owners of mangaslide retarded?

After reading that, I seriously felt like half of my brain exploded from the random, nonsensical accusations. Then towards the end, they even admitted to their own stupidity while still trying to make it seem like they were in the right.

All I can say is: FAGS

  • Maye

    >Make random, nonsensical accusations
    >Find out your’e wrong
    >Call them stupid

    Profit.

  • PayPal does not take fees since we partnered with GlobalGiving.
