As you can tell, I’m not particularly active much anymore. Just doing some Aria work. And I’m a bit pissed off at the lack of staff we have.
So I am recruiting editors and QCers and typesetters. The requirement is that you need to be available a lot between now and July 4th. Go to #Chihiro-recruits, wait for me to get to you, and then I will give you a test/first assignment.
Soichiro edit: Guys (and girls), we seriously need typesetters. At least one. If you know how to typeset in Aegisub, come apply, please.
demize edit: For the record, editors edit the subtitles, so being fluent and good with English is a must. QCs do Quality Check – they make sure that the subs are fully edited and well timed. Typesetters do the signs, so you should be (but don’t necessarily need to be) familiar with typesetting in .ass files. Also, come work for us please! We’re out of QCs, and we don’t really have many editors.
(more information after the break)demize edit #2: Quick summary of all questions asked so far:
- Apply in #chihiro-recruits on irc.rizon.net. This comment will help if you have no bloody clue what IRC is. As well, the test you’ll be given involves QCing or editing a script and having us check it over afterwards.
- You’ll be using Aegisub (http://aegisub.org) to edit/QC unless you have software that can handle .ass files as well as it already.
- You should be available as much as possible. Ideally, you should have no life and constantly lurk on IRC. However, we understand when life gets in your way.
- No knowledge of Japanese necessary, but it would be useful.
What kind of test?
You’ll be given a script to edit/QC/typeset. It may or may not be something we’re currently doing (and haven’t yet released) but the chances of that are pretty high :p
What kind of software will be used/Required?
Aegisub.
I think I could edit, but just to make sure, all editors are asked to do is fiddle with grammar of the raw translations to make sure it flows or is a deeper understanding of Japanese also a requirement? Since my Japanese is.. let’s just say that there’s a REASON I watch anime with subtitles.
You just need to edit, you don’t need to know Japanese. A bit of knowledge will help, and you do need to change punctuation based on the audio (eg. “I love this game.” when said excitedly should become “I love this game!”) and context, but it’s mostly just making sure everything is grammatically correct.
yikes. is it worrying that staff quit so easily? I’m totally incapable of doing any of this stuff but I hope things work out.
Where do we go to submit for the opening such as Editor?
Ok… I must be blind as hell because I cannot find where to go to even attempt to apply… ๐
#Chihiro-recruits on irc.rizon.net on irc.
I’m already an Editor with another group. However, I don’t troll in irc and don’t speed.
I am interested, but the problem is that I have exams till July 5th. If its okay to pitch in a after that?
I really want to join but I have school and all that. D: Good luck with the recruiting!
Well you could still apply for after your exams or school.
Recruiting is always open. ^^
If that’s the case, I’ll give it a shot after my exams this Friday ๐
Thing is though, I still have classes on Wednesday and Thursdays. I’ll check it out over the weekends
Editing or QCing seem likes things i could do, but what software would be required for either?
Just to clarify, where do we apply?
Required software is aegisub (freeware).
For applying, install a software like mirc and then copy/paste that “irc://irc.rizon.net:6667/Chihiro-recruits” (without brackets) in your browser and click ok/go. mirc should launch then and redirect you there.
I’m up for trying to be an editor, but I’ve never used aegisub before.
That’s easy to use.
Quick question. About how much time do you want us to devote to these positions? I would like to know a rough estimate to see if i can fit it into my current schedule.
Righto.. Noted and noted again on the freeware.. Well.. Starting today (last day of exams) I recon I got some spare time on my hands to edit some subtitles.. But I guess I better first apply properly on IRC before getting ahead of myself. Speaking of which, I run on GMT+1 (Dutch time), so when do I have to be on there to be properly interviewed?
I can’t answer how much time is needed, it depends on how good you are. The only way to know that is to give it a try.
For a proper interview, it’s best to come in the evening, whatever timezone you live in.
It also depends on how good the translator is. Sometimes you have to try to figure out WTF he’s trying to say. Other times, it’s just making sure the dialogue flows, no misspelling, and punctuation.
I’d love to apply to be an editor since i am pretty good (I think) with English grammar (and especially since i live in the states. east coast) but i don’t know if i would have the time since my work hours are somewhat irregular. otherwise i would apply without hesitation.
I wish I could help you guys I really do. But I don’t know how to do any of those things and I’m working 50 hour work weeks atm. I’m sorry. ๐
well it looks like irc is down, if ya want my typeset can be found here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=umjjd42n
IRC is working fine. I’ll pass that one to Kristen though.
Is it okay if I’m with damn crappy unbelievable internet connection? -btw, I’m interested in doing typeset.
I don’t even using Aegisub for like 5 mins. counts… It’s been a couple since I even looked at the program.
*couple of years STUPID O.C.D.
@Wanderer
Well, you want to at least be able to download the working raw (video) in a reasonable time so if it takes you days to download an anime episode then it might be too slow… I think.
Anyway, if you have more questions, you can also ask them on the irc channel.
Work raws are generally small. And as long as you can download one in a couple hours, you’ll be fine – we’re (obviously) not a speedsubbing group. Although, if you can get things done quickly, that’s so much better :p
what’s the test for typesetters? cuz the channel topic doesn’t specify what to download and work with.
@cuvia
From what I’ve heard from Kristen, you are typesetting the same episode so download both the script and video in the channel topic then typeset the signs in that episode.
So I completely a script, but I stupidly have no idea how to PM somebody on this site so that I can send a link to the completed file. Can anybody help me solve this dumb problem?
personally, I have no idea where to start when it comes to subbing, and i don’t have enough time with 3 kids and college, i wish I could take part in this since i am a native english speaker and how sick i am of crunchyroll subs
True that. I can’t stand subs from Crunchyroll.
uhmm… Be available most of the times….. I am available every night during weekdays and free on weekends, is that okay for an editor? I really like your subs and wish to help out somehow…
That’s great. Feel free to come apply!
I’ve got about 3.5 years of formal Japanese language study and a computer science degree. I also like to be grammatically correct. Let me know what I can do to help.
