You have quite possibly one of the worst encodes i’ve ever seen from a source that is fantastic.
RandomDisgustedPerson: Well if you read the “How to Encode” instructions from this site you would understand why. Encoding is done without a lot of the filtering etc., to get the job done in a quickly. Chihiro are speed subbers. Though I think they do a great job despite that. Of course maybe the particular source they choose was bad to begin with. I could be on purpose just to remind everyone of their roots 😉

Axlen, what do you mean “How to Encode”, it is no where near encoding. No one in Chihiro knows how to encode, so it’s just eye cancer.
Also, if Chihiro plans to do ZKC 1-14, I hope you don’t “borrow” Deculture’s subs.

I prefer AVI because MKV wont work on my 360. I like to watch everything on the big screen
@Kristen i know you allready had this question but i’ll do it in a diffrent way… can you please also sub Slayers Revolution and if not are you good buddies with any other sub groups you could ask to do it? all the groups where forced to drop it and a lot of us want to watch Slayers Revolution but cant now >>…expecially when DVD’s probablly wont be released here for awhile sadly even when it does offcially get licenced..so yeah even if your to busy currentlly maybe soon you will have free enough time to pick it up or can ask other groups for us would be great and we would all be happy ^^
People whining about Chihiro’s subs need to step back and look at what you’re doing. Coming here and expecting to find Q-subs is sort of like going to McDonald’s and trying to order filet mignon. It doesn’t matter how much you ask for it and complain about it, you’re not going to get it. You know why? Because Chihiro is not a Q-sub group; they’re a speedsub group and they’re damned good at it. If you’re coming here expecting to find subs with all the bells and whistles then you are going to be disappointed every single time. what you will find, however, are basic subs done well and fast. If this is all you are looking for then you’ve come to the right place. If you, for whatever reason, desire something more then you’d be better served looking elsewhere.

I have no problems with speed subs, but their attitude is surprisingly stupid. Oh and btw, anyone can do speedsubs.

Sidoguy, I hope you know that I haven’t been encoding in months. We’ve had real encoders working with us, and they do much better than the encoding guide or just renaming files. Besides, I never rename a file to change the container and released it. It presented me with too many issues.
Anyways, I’m assuming you’re someone from Deculture.

Let’s start with a nice example of how Kristen asks for encoding advice, gets decent advice and rejects it.

As for Chihiro, I doubt there are any quality fansubbers who ‘enjoy’ your subs, maybe there have been some sparks between you and Deculture, but I haven’t seen a single quality fansubber support your work. And as an encoder I believe that most of the actual chihiro ‘encodes’ are pure eyecancer, maybe except some of those which you just mux from raws are tolerable. So let’s brush that aside and try to find some other redeeming quality in your fansubs, would that be translation, editing? If one were to ask a good translation checker to check the quality of your translation they’d find numerous errors. So what does this leave? A poorly done ‘speedsub’. Yes, you seem quite proud of being speedsubbers, and whenever someone asks why you don’t QC, why are there so many mistakes, why does the video look terrible and so on, you will say that you’re speedsubbers.
What does it mean to speedsub? It means to release a fansub in a quick amount of time, possibly competing with other groups. Does it say anything about quality? No.
Let’s take 2 not so random groups, Eclipse and gg. Are they speedsubbers? Yes, in some cases, gg releases within 6-9 hours from airing for some shows, Eclipse does it within 8-16 hours. Now let’s talk about their quality:
gg – very good translation/editing, only minor mistakes, typesetting is a nice softsub .ASS, properly timed, excellent video quality since they use a .ts stream and have a skilled encoder who can do a proper IVTC and knows his filters. Little or no QC overall, but there is an RC(Release Candidate) QC step, or what you call ‘fining’ ( Why the hell did you invent this stupid term? If you had any prior knowledge of fansubbing you’d know this is called RC QC or the final step before a release and tends to be done by the encoder only or the encoder and some QCers, which is the same thing as you do. )
Eclipse – fairly good translation/editing, some minor mistakes, excellent typesetting, properly timed, they even bothered to do karaoke and sometimes even do After Effects(AFX) typesetting(mind you, this is a speedsub group!), excellent video, due to a very good source, same as gg’s .ts actually, again a very skilled encoder. Possibly soft QC, and one final RC by the encoder.
These are examples of quality speedsub groups. You may wonder how they achieve this speed and quality in such a short period of time. The answer is that they have a small dedicated team with flexible schedules who knows what they are doing and they pipeline their work, thus achieving a fast release time with quality approaching a slower quality group, but they do compromise on some smaller details to increase their speed, however these are not things most people, even quality subbers would be bothered by much.
I could go into detail how this can be done, but I doubt you are very interested in an efficient quality subbing process, as Chihiro is content with just “getting something out” regardless of how bad it is.
You believe that by eliminating most steps in making a good fansub, and only leaving translation, timing and muxing or ‘encoding’, you can get faster speedsubs than your competition.
Let’s see, 4-6 hours for release, while gg does it in 6-9 hours, with all the bells and whistles. Some of your delay may have been caused by waiting for a raw, and using chinese/korean subs for translation. This is a slower, error prone way. You also encode with stupid filterchains which you only use because they are fast, but do you know that the fastest filterchain would be just re-encoding the raw without filtering? ( I’m not saying you shouldn’t filter, but if you’re going to use eyecancer generating chains, it would be better if you’d just skip the filtering altogether. )
What can Chihiro do to change this? Perfect your skills in each of the “fansubbing arts”, ask experienced subbers for help, don’t release crap once you’re just bored of it. I don’t see this happening while Kristen leads Chihiro as this requires a major group philosophy/paradigm change, which can’t happen when the group leader believes you must release your work within a few hours regardless of what it is.
So what can we call Chihiro’s subs? You may call them speedsubs if you wish, but speedy shitsubs would be a more accurate term.
P.S.: I’m not from Deculture, but while I don’t approve of groups bashing each other, I do find this current affair quite funny, but it was probably caused by your childish attitude of releasing episode ZKC 01 in QUALITYsub variant, after all, we all know that each anime deserves a shitsub, even if quality subs have been long available. What good does it do to release that badly translated, eyecancer-inducing thing? You’re already a vampire subber by picking up ZKC in the middle of the season, does it really matter if you do all the earlier episodes in QUALITY, I thought Chihiro’s goal was to do speedy subs, not to complete old series in a QUALITY manner.

… What the?… Er… Anyways, thanks for subbing a great show, I love your subs, this speedsubs, qualitysubs bla bla, I don’t really care about, I just care about watching m’ shows in a way that I understand and the fastest possible… Chihiro does that awesomly good, however, I have a couple of tiny things to point out from ZKC. The first is the video quality could be a bit better, true, but imo its a bit secondary, I consider it good enough, but its that “just a tiny better wouldn’t hurt”. The chief’s face is always hilarious to see, heh. And the second thing would be the subs… That strong pink is kinda blindy… Kinda hurts the eyes ya know, just my 2 cents. Otherwise, everythin’s cool.
Anws, Chihiro is one of my top favourites. Keep up the good work!

I hope you do realize gg QCs each and EVERY episode. Only reason gg doesn’t release faster, if gg had not QC’d I can assure you each and every episode would’ve been out way earlier and before Nightspeed.

Well see, Eclipse and gg is formed of “slow” quality subbers, who dedicate x day to sub, and not waste time. That is the only reason why they are able to sub fast. Of course, a dedicated TL is required to do this, otherwise it’s not possible..
I do not see Chihiro formed of “quality” subbers, so there is NO, yes NO hope for Chihiro to improve, unless they go out and change their attitudes and ARE willing to learn.

Still a dead link on mkv for Episode 1. I am trying to replace the Deculture subs as I prefer to have just one group’s translations for consistency. This is the only episode I am still missing. Please repost.
