@Anttown: because Skip Beat is available RIGHT NOW. You can go and download it for free for CR RIGHT NOW. You can pay for a HQ version from CR RIGHT NOW. True, some countries don’t have access. Maria-sama is NOT AVAILABLE anywhere, in any form/shape. The first DVD is most likely 3-4 month away. Nobody wants to wait.
I live in the Philippines, but even here i was able to buy the Right Stuf two boxed season of Maria watches over us, and is now waiting for my order of the third collection to come.
I’m very glad Chihiro is continuing fan-subbing the series, since I’m sure the release of the Fourth season by Right Stuf will probably take half a year for it to come out. (which I’m sure most of us are gonna buy)
I don’t think Chihiro needs to provide an explanation or excuse. You gave it some thought, and decided continuing to sub the show was the right move. That’s all that needs to be said. If people are bothered by it, they should go elsewhere. Life is short. Don’t fill it with pointless arguments and shallow drama over unimportant things.
i really thank u ppl with all i have for subbing marimite cause u know, here where i live its difficult to get this kind of things (anime seasons on dvd n stuff).. u are being very generous in doing this work.. im looking foward for the next episode n)3 ~chuuu~
Also … like someone had already written… licensor should consider reasons why most of poeple get fansubs… for me it… i would like to have my shelves stacked with anime DVDs and light novels and Manga volumes… but … I don’t really see point in buying stuff in other than my native language (Cz) … even though in this age english is tought everywhere and I pretty much understand everything i need… i still prefer having the option of my own language be it dub or sub (sub would be more than enough) …
So imo it would be better if licensors invested more to expanding to various countries instead of enforcing their rights on fansubbing groups.. :-/
Even though i wrote all this i’m kind of weak against collectables.. so i’m working parttime to buy some limited edition DVDs… can’t decide which though… Lucky star or Haruhi would be nice π
Thankyou so much for continuing to sub this series π
After watching the first few episodes it would’ve been a real bummer to have to wait for a dvd release to see the rest of this season. Of course I would have to order the dvds from the usa which is another pain as I can’t see this series being released on dvd where I live anytime soon.
I always buy the dvds for the anime that I like but sometimes the translations in official releases are just not as good as fansubs so that’s another reason that groups like yours are so valuable to fans (not including that fact that we get to watch new anime with subs as it gets aired in Japan!).
Thanks for all of your hard work and I can’t wait to watch more soon π
1) Those not in R1 can either import the American licensed DVDs or watch fansubs IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE. That’s ethically fine because the license only covers America and its border states. Brazilians going “but if Chihiro stop subban, I can’t watch Maria cuz license isn’t here!” – here’s a pro-tip: try looking for Brazilian subs. Not hard. Same for you Frenchies, Czechs, Germans, etc, etc, etc.
2) The Japanese generally do have to pay to watch anime too as most series air on sbscription only TV channels. Very few series air on free-to-view channels.
3) Ethically-speaking, subbing unlicensed series is okay because there’s no other way of seeing and understanding these series legally, but as soon as a legal alternative is offered, then the ethical boundaries blur. Why should fansubs be offered when there are legal alternatives either being released or have a release date? In a sense, fansubbing licensed shows is more akin to piracy (yknow all those adverts “You wouldn’t steal a car” etc – they’re referring to YOU).
4) As soon as you sub a licensed show, you’re automatically competing with American licensing companies. That means you’re taking away business from the livelihoods of the people working in these companies, as well as from the Japanese companies, some of which by and large, depend on licensing costs to produce high quality anime series for fans.
Now, you can cut it whatever way you like, but the facts speak for itself. Gonzo has sacked three-quarters of its staff because it’s just not making enough money. These are the anime PRODUCERS themselves we’re talking about. Do the math – less anime production, less anime for you to sub/watch. You’re only hurting yourselves as well as the people who depend on anime for their livelihood.
And anyone who argues that fansubbing isn’t doing any damage to the industry in the fact of this evidence is just trying to justify their own downloading habits.
@FalseDown: WRONG. Gonzo is going down because of SHIT anime. So studios will try to make LESS shitty anime, so all is good. I am GLAD Gonzo will go down, since all they do is butcher good manga, and get a good show once in a blue moon, usually because of a joint.
Stop with the ethical talk, nobody wants to hear it, and few care. What part of “don’t care” don’t you understand? The “don’t”, or the “care”? Do I have to find a picture?
And for the love of , piracy can not equal stealing, by definition. Fansubs should not be offered when there IS a legal alternative RIGHT NOW. Maria will have a legal alternative IN THE FAR FUTURE. As in, not NOW. So I don’t see a problem subbing something that does not have a legal alternative. It has a release date? Oh, release dates are ALWAYS followed, and there are never any delays, and there are never any canceled release. Here’s another hint: GO AWAY. All you are proving is that you can’t shut up. You’ve said the same thing 3 times, and the answer has always been “don’t care”. You don’t need to repeat it a 4th time to find out the answer. It’s going to be “don’t care”.
but … I don’t see reason why i can’t have english subs for anime, which IS licensed in US but IS NOT licensed in CZ… as it is the very same as if anyone in US had english subs for anime that is not licensed there … or if i had subs in any other language… The fact that the subs are in english doesn’t prove that it’s american made…
By logic that english is spoken in US .. therefore all english fansubbers are violating US licenses.. then US licensor should also be persecuting any other fansubbers as there are quite a lot of minorities in US…
And saying that Fansubbing is harmful to anime industry is imo not exactly right….
anime is quite popular lately.. and i think that it’s closely related to the fact that most of shows can be downloaded from fansubbers for free..
As for piracy … equalling piracy to stealing is extreme… most of poeple who download movies/music/tv shows or anything other… would never try to steal anything not to mention… that if they didn’t download it they wouldn’t bother buying it and waited for it to be free in radio/TV
So why not continue Skip beat?
I’m just so happy that kind people like you, Chihiro, exist! Love you!!

A couple of points I’d like to address:
1) Those not in R1 can either import the American licensed DVDs or watch fansubs IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE. That’s ethically fine because the license only covers America and its border states. anime is quite popular lately.. and i think that it’s closely related to the fact that most of shows can be downloaded from fansubbers for free..
As in my case…first anime I watched was FMA on Youtube.. i don’t even know which group made the subs… but as it was already licensed (it was in 2005)… and around that time only anime on czech tv was pokΓ©mon and digimon… i can be pretty certain that if i waited for anime for older than 10 to be aired in tv i wouldn’t be watching it at all… not to mention wanting to buy any DVDs at all…
As for piracy … equalling piracy to stealing is extreme… most of poeple who download movies/music/tv shows or anything other… would never try to steal anything not to mention… that if they didn’t download it they wouldn’t bother buying it and waited for it to be free in radio/TV
