Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (2009) – 01 DVD

I’m sorry.

Quite a way to start a blog post. But, it’s what I have to do. As you can see, we’ve released Haruhi DVD 1 in all of it’s glory. And the main episode, 23 minutes and 34.817 seconds of it, is 120 MB.

This was NOT intended at all. I wanted something like 190 or 200, like a DVD was supposed to have. But, for whatever reason, this DVD wouldn’t allow me. I did a crf 19.5 encode and got a 77 MB file that looked good at a lower than normal quantizizer (13.6). This is the largest this file can physically go without breaking the min quantizizer available in my matrices. And, for that, I’m really really sorry. But, well, there’s no blocking to be found in it, so I guess it could be a good thing? I WILL NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE ENCODE THIS ENTIRE SERIES TO 120 MB UNLESS THINGS LIKE THIS HAPPEN EVERY DVD.

This file makes use of ordered chapters AND editions. This means that you can choose whether you wish to see the hardsubbed karaoked version of the ED, a softsubbed version, or no subs on the ED at all. To do so, open the video in Media Player Classic. The hardsubbed version will be the default. To get the softsubbed, right click on the video, highlight filters, and choose the bottom option. Then select Edition 2. This will enable the softsubbed karaoke edition, which will act like all other fully softsubbed files.

yea was like why so small, but the detail blog makes up for the confusion. k
    thx. woo hoo.

  • Seems you’re experiencing “x264 is too leet” syndrome.

  • What CryptWizard said. Mbtree probably played a part in that.

Know what, if assuming the quality is the same, the file size being smaller is a good thing. You make it sound like the file size being small is bad… If you really want large file sizes, go use XviD, fuck, why not just use huffyuv, it’ll be like 4GB then.

Considering it’s Haruhi, not Macross, and the OP and ED are cut out, I don’t find it particularly surprising that the file size turned up like that.

  • “This is the largest this file can physically go without breaking the min quantizizer available in my matrices.”

I don’t care if you have to go out and buy a new metrics, it is unacceptable to have such a low file size. At least add some padding to hide your laziness.

I appreciate that even though this is such a small file, a release is a release. Thanks very much ^_^

  • John

does being small means the resolution is smaller?

  • Ascendancy

Why would you want softsubbed karaoke. It’s way to hard on the processor, if the karaoke is anything special.

  • tsk, there’s no need for Kristen to apologize to these bunch of wankers >_>.

Anyways, thanks, hardsubbed kara by default is nice.
BD version coming? Hope that isn’t 170Mb on 720p :P.

lol, you guys are talking like small filesize is a bad thing. low crf is assuring that the encode will have good quality, no matter what the bitrate is. imo the lower the better. actually i’d love to see 170MB 720p releases, i don’t like the recent trend of unnecessarily bloated encodings.

  • Modhesh

well, smaller the better.. Unless it’s an EyeSore.

  • Tow3r

i think it’s pointless to do dvd version , unless it got some added stuff.

  • Nyool

i downlosded from torrent but my media player well all the player i have cant seem to play it all i see i a black screen that it.

  • Thanks for the effort, but this does pay a price for being 120MB, and I’m surprised you missed it…

No blocks or banding, it’s true, but unfortunately there’s visible ghosting around many of the thin black lines (vaguely resembling the mark of an unsharp mask). Easy example: “50% off summer bargain” line—look at Kyon’s arm over his white shirt, even visible at native size.

Hard to guess the reason that it’s refusing to make this better. Maybe this matrix is really for 720p and just doesn’t like lines as thin as you get in 480p; maybe the in-loop deblocking filter has been set negative and shouldn’t be; maybe you really do need a lower quant. Maybe x264 is just trying to be too sharp, or you’re used to filtering the extremely noisy/dotcrawly raws and this is too much of a change?

    Thank you anyway, Kristen!

DVD seems like such a halfway measure now BDs have come along, mind you. I’ll wait for those.

  • Kristen

That’s haloing. It was an inborn problem with the DVD. I did my best to nuke it out, but it’s impossible to remove all of it.

  • They oversharpened the DVD? Aww, nuts. 🙁 Fair enough. It might be possible to deconvolve it, but not easily.

Here’s hoping the BDs are awesome… if they come…

  • I hereby decree that if for any reason a DVD release of Haruhi does not meet the minimum filesize of 180MB, the difference must be made up in high-resolution photographs of Kristin, packed in a folder marked “CONSOLATION CONTENT” and included within the torrent.

(low-resolution photographs of other staff members totaling an equal filesize may be substituted in case of emergency no more than 3 times per series. Mailing addresses and phone numbers are optional, and may be included in a .txt file.)

…oh, and thanks for the release too.

  • timfan

    Where is the AVI version?

    I do hope you’re kidding.

  • blazewardog

Question- why would you want a larger encode when a your using a low crf value anyway?

  • Dark Shikari

Your complaint has been processed and we will be making x264 worse in the next version so that problems like this won’t occur again 😉

  • Klingengeist

I hope it doesnt look much worse than the tv episodes because of the lower dvd resolution like its the case with the R+V Capu2 DVDs. The only reason to get the latter is because they are uncensored. :/

Anyway, thx for the extra work. ^^

I don’t know if you guys mind someone pointing out typos…

But at 17:02 Kyon says “That a terribly long time.”

I think it is supposed to be “That’s a terribly long time.”

Sorry if you don’t like things like this pointed out.

  • @Gar
Don’t think it will matter unless they will do blue-ray if that even comes out….
Making a v2 for a lil mistake seems a waste of valuable time ^.^

120MB <3 the size made me download it xD
And my new found love for loli’s

  • crossed

    FFFFFFFFffffffffff—
120MB? if they all turn out this way, I may just save 896MB on endless faggotry by getting this instead.

  • walkingaround

File size doesn’t matter but quality does.
I use megui cq18 for anime
    The file size is random,
    sometimes less than 200mb for a 720p
and it sometimes jumps up to 400mb
DVD is not very “enlargeable” for HD viewing, kind of blur
If there is BD, it would be great.

  • Skyjedi

I thought the official release already had subtitles. I won’t be downloading this i will buy it and actually support the artists and the failing anime industry.

Though i will not be buying the four endless eight dvd’s that would end up costing 200 hundred us dollars.

I also don’t know why Kyoto Animation is still not rendering their animation in 1080p HD, and uses upscales. People claim k-on is their first true non upscaled blu ray, which i can neither confirm or deny. But it is an absolute joke the production values for the second haruhi season are lower than the first, and it was a joke in the first place that season one was not rendered high definition.

Had this been the era of hand drawn animation photographed on film the anime would be future proof for blu ray.
