Hi,
Next season, we are continuing Railgun and Shugo Chara, and will add one show. We would like to do Vampire Bund. However, this is a Shaft show which means 50-100 signs per episode.
We would need typesetters in order to do this show. Aegisub or AFX is fine, so long as it is good. You will be tested on a show of similar difficulty. We are looking for someone who could typeset in a reasonable amount of time, stay active throughout the season, and provide a consistently good job.
To apply, please join #[email protected] .
And yes, I know this is an extremely early post. Like, 2 months early. But we need all the time we can get to find a typesetter.
This is not a pick up post. This is a recruitment post. Please do not assume we have picked Vampire Bund up until we make it official. We are presently looking at this as an option.
Wish i could help you guys out coz vampire bund isnt a bad manga….pitty i dont have the skills 🙁
good to see you’re giving this show some thought, looked like an interesting show.
time to take up the computer class i have been thinking about
I can help bee a comedian buzzin around crackin jokes.
…bee.
…buzzin
get it?
……………get it?!!?!?1?!
Not _every_ SHAFT production ever attempts to attempt the world record for the number of signs in 25 minutes. But, yes, they definitely do seem to like them. They frequently have so many that I don’t have a clue how even a native speaker keeps up without the judicious use of the pause button.
“They frequently have so many that I don’t have a clue how even a native speaker keeps up without the judicious use of the pause button.”
Have you watched Bakemonogatari’s rapid flashes of screens filled with text in the beginning of each episode? Clearly, the native speakers don’t keep up.
Vampire Bund should NOT have 100 signs per episode. It’s a manga adaptation, so I can’t even imagine why or how they would have all those signs.
What’s a SHAFT anyway ???
i can time, and i’m a bit of a rookie at typesetting, and i haven’t done it in a while, and i’ll drop by #Chihiro-recruits later but not got the time now, or you can drop me an e-mail (y)
@Xeferah
SHAFT is an anime studio: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=677
They tend to have a very distinctive style – particularly when director Akiyuki Shinbo is involved. Having tons of signs is one of the things that they tend to do – many of which go by so fast that you have to pause to have any hope of reading them. They don’t _always_ have tons of signs (I don’t remember many from Moonphase), but they usually do. As mentioned above, their recent show Bakemonogatari is a prime example of how they have tons of signs. Actually, it’s a good example of their style in general – with lots of weird angles and the like. Sometimes it works well, and sometimes not, but I think that they’ve generally gotten better with it over time (though I think that what they did with Soultaker has left me permanently damaged).
Woah. Weird things happened to the formatting on the first line (well second, I guess) of my post. Maybe I should have put the URL on a second line…
What does a typesetter do?
It’s THE SHAFT!

hmm… regarding the Bund thing..
Mina Tepes, the Princess of the ancient covenant and ruler of all vampires
Țepeș. Tzepesh.
Tz sounds like the end of Gantz.
Sh sounds like the beginning of shi… you get the idea ^^.
And to think that Dracula became an icon of an area from my country…
*slaps knee* ^^
@Kalessin
I agree, their unique style in their execution has often impressed me and captured my interest. My favourite anime, Ef, was also produced by them. There, they focused more on visual scenery and utilising colours for symbolism rather than placing abstract signs everywhere (which is quite intriguing though I daresay, it makes typesetting a nightmare).
Oh, and in Bakemonogatari, did anyone else find themselves madly pressing the space bar to pause and unpause the video in order to read each screen of text which was being flashed in quick succession? It was annoying when I was too slow and missed a screen so I had to skip back 😀
oh Mina, the things I would do… O(≧∇≦)O
WOW…..I really really hope u will pick up Vampire Bund…..I love anime with vampires……10x Chihiro!!!
“Next season, we are continuing Railgun and Shugo Chara”..
Am I wrong to assume that all other shows will thus be dropped?
@Mile5
More like they’ll be finished.
Mile5 – Sasameki Koto and Asura Cryin air their final episode on December 23rd.
On December 23rd? More like on the 24th
*slaps knee
@ Flare
Haha, You’re not alone there, I was clicking my mouse every couple of seconds trying to read those dam screens.
On Topic: Sorry, I have no talent at any part of the translation process =(
Could probably learn but…. meh don’t think anyone would bother teaching and I’m lazy =D
I’m very sorry for being off, but can I ask when can we expect the new zettai karen children batch? if my memory is right a few months ago there was already only one episode to fix for the second batch O.o
same here i will always pressing space when i miss out some of the screens for example Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei or Bakemonogatari. Every sentence they have meaning to it
They do leave a lot of signs everywhere @.@
Usually need to pause the video multiple times to read each of them. ~!#~#~!4
I would /love/ to be a type setter for you guys. I enjoy the video editing process, and the like. The only problem is that I’ve never done anything quite like this, and I would have to learn from scratch. Something I doubt I’ll be fully competent in within 2 months.
I wish you guys luck on finding some people, and look forward to future releases. 🙂
がんばろう~
are you guy going to do Akikan! OVA
I will be surprised if you do not do Vampire Bund, it is the only good show in the winter season. Another sign is that you are jumping the gun earlier, it will be broadcast in FEBRUARY so it is still very far away.
Slaps Kristen for no good reason.
@Kurausuki
Aegisub is free and their site includes a manual, wiki and a forum with plenty of good info to get you on the right track. If you want to learn to typeset, why not download it and play around with it? Just because you don’t know how to do it right now doesn’t mean you can’t pick it up.
mangamuscle: Only good show of the season, aside from Durarara!!, Katanagatari, and Hanamaru Kindergarten(You scoff, until you see the production company.). The rest of the season is pretty much shit, though, aside from Hidamari, which is just meh(unless you really like slice of life).
I’m just timer, I tried to typset once for you but ended up with nothing 😀
@fuzzbucket
I’m sure I can learn with time, just not in the 2 months to be able to do this stuff on demand, and with consistent quality.
Thanks for the info though, I will look into trying some of it out when have the time.
What are signs like actual sign signs for buildings, roads and what not? Or are they something else?
The 4th step to knowing is to ask.
@Seavarud
They’re any text that’s on the screen. That can often mean street signs, shop signs, writing on chalkboards, and the like. However, in the case of SHAFT, they frequently just show text on the screen with a solid background of some color. That text could be showing characters’ thoughts, or commentary on the situation, or any number of bizarre things.
Basically, when people talk about subbing signs, they’re talking translating text on the screen as opposed to dialog.
TO LOVE-RU OVA 4 RAWS ARE OUT
OH COOL, GO SUB IT AND GTFO.
LOL OK
@Seavarud
try watching bakemonogatari for a solid example.
thanks for the railgun 5… oh wait
Admitting it is the first step….
*puts arm around Kristen*
are you guys doing To-Love Ru OVA 4? when will it be out?
