Rules are as follows:
- Banners must be 800x250px. Don’t round the edges or anything silly like that.
- Banners may contain any female characters from any show Chihiro has done since the start of the spring season this year or any show we’re currently doing.
- Banners may not contain males. Lolis only.
- Banners may not be, in any way, explicit. IE, no exposed nipples, vaginas or butts.
- Banners should be winter themed.
- DeadlineΒ is November 14th at midnight EST. May be extended if there aren’t enough entries we like.
- One banner per comment, but no limit on the number of comments you can make.

Skullmon, if you change the font to something simpler, and have the text based in white instead of black, that will probably not only be a good banner, but my guess is it’ll also be selected.

I spent all day drawing Natsuki, with a mouse :\ and the text (except “subs”) is not a font, it’s drawn and then painstakingly made to look as close the lilpri text as i can be arsed π
and uh, the gradient has snowflakes on top, uh, yeh! heh, well i hope the effort shows anyway…
the second variant of this will happen later, when my Natsuki drawing has legs ^.^

How the heck do you guys make your banners?!? I’m just starting to learn using Adobe Flash CS4 and you guys blow me out of the water (only got up to changing background colour…haven’t started text/image yet). Do you guys draw the images, get them from the net, what? I wanna know π
Most of mine were done with scans I have of album covers (like k-on) or random images from google. However, I drew Natsuki in the last one, but that took all day and she’s not finished yet -no legs :p then used filters and blend modes for everything else.
Flash will be easy for drawing and gradients, but I would use illustrator or photoshop, or both, personally. Actually, I didn’t use adobe stuff – mine are all done exclusively in Serif DrawPlus… It’s like a budget Illustrator alternative π

Flash isn’t really suitable for this kind of thing, it’s designed for time-based or interactive media. It’s great, but takes great dedication to learn!
GIMP is free, and much more intuitive. Maybe you could give that a go?
For me and my banners, I get a general idea or theme. Since this is the winter banner contest, winter themes like snow, ice and christmas. Then I go browsing on the net for elements to use. Then I bring the elements into photoshop and just start playing around, different blend modes, layers, effects, and usually what happens is that I come across a combination which starts to look good (to me at least). Up until this part it’s usually trial and error, playing around, but once you start to see what looks good then you can focus on working towards that.
With my first one I had the problem that all the crops on the picture of them skating either cut out the ice or their skates, so I was working on blending and ended up making the picture round. That gave me the inspiration for an ornament on a tree. Went looking, found one I liked, then decided how to bring the title into it.
The next two had the same train of thought, and I used the same text on both for the title because I liked the clean look of white text. The trick with the second was that I added a layer of ice over the snow pattern and with the blending options, lightened up the background. Unlike the Railgun banner with the dark blue, the K-on characters looked much better with a light background.
So overall, if you have the talent, draw, but most of us aren’t that lucky. So look for elements, don’t be afraid to change them, nothing personally bugs me more than seeing someone take a complete image and just crop and stick a name on it. Your creativity is how you take the parts you find and bring them together. Play around until you get a solid idea of what you want it to look like then build towards that. If it’s your first time, save often and save as different files so you can always go back.
I can’t really give help on the creative part (seeing as I’m a bit lacking as of recent) but if I had any advice to give, it would be take your time. Don’t just slap a couple things together and assume its awesome. Experiment a little and see what works for you. If there are cropping problems and you can see them at 100%, chances are someone else will to. Treat it as a piece of art. Use Skullmons last To Love Ru banner as a good example. Me? I’m honestly having a hard time trying to make everything seem wintery, but dang it, I can use the pen tool! Oh yeah, and text. Nothing EXTREME. Simple, visible, and goes with the picture. Mix in a pot (photoshop/gimp) and BOOM, banner.

@DarkQuach: Since the forum will crop and round the edges, having a square border might not be a good idea. Personal opinion, not really winter themed and the font is weird. But that’s only my opinion and may not hold true to the tastes of everyone else.
@DarkQuach: I agree with Aodh. The border isn’t necessary and change the font to something more simple; less…..wobbley? lol Other than that, I like it. If you can, you may want to remove the group from the spring-like setting and go more wintery.
