Got me. I really like it. Maybe it’s not Naruto-y or Bleach-y enough.
Hmm, it’s not a bad show but I wasn’t as good as I was hoping it would be…I give it a little above average. Although, this is coming from the person who thinks Sengoku Otome is actually pretty good for what I was expecting. This season is definitely filled with good anime like Steins;Gate, Softenni, A-Channel, TWGOK2 and Nichijou. HIdan no Aria is little less interesting…not sure why…maybe my expectations of it were too high? Then again I was basing my expectations off of a little info about it and the studio behind it…who knows. Maybe people were wanting another Bleach like Rally says…
It’s awesome. Some people are just stupid. >_>
I feel like there’s very little plot depth. It’s pretty much a basic ecchi anime where two girls fight over one guy, and there happen to be swords and guns added in to make it a little more exciting. Aria then references her mom about once every other episode as if to remind the viewer that there’s actually a reason this stuff is taking place.
people expect every show to have some kind of originality or something. Shows like these aren’t suppose to have overly deep plots or have surprising twist and turns. Idk why people expect that when it’s pretty obvious this is intended to be cute and funny with a dash of expected romance. All wrapped up with some ba action…that’s it. I’m enjoying it. And this isn’t anywhere near an ecchi soichiro.
Did you read the fail article on anime news network about this anime? The person gives it a D- rating claiming its a bunch of cliche’ items thrown together and all not making sense.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com.au/review/aria-the-scarlet-ammo/episodes-1
I think they are talking S*$T
Urusai….
Only thing i dont like is wating for the next ep 😀
The lead VA’s keep reminding me of Toradora. Regardless of what the plot is, this isn’t the same quality level as Toradora. I find the acting dry and nothing has been done to give the two main characters that connection we’re expected to see at the end.
I find the series really boring. I watched the first 7 episodes, figuring I’d give it an arc and a half, but towards the middle of the 7th episode, I was fast forwarding through it, not really sure why I was watching it, since I wasn’t getting any entertainment value out of it.
The best way to put it, I think, is that the cliches and lack of character depth make the story ultimately feel pointless; it’s like watching a bunch of paper cutouts, rather than interesting characters.
Well thanks to you guys for constantly releasing – hope you’ll finish it.
Those which haven’t dropped the show yet will appreciate it I’m sure 🙂

“So, can somebody explain to me why this show is considered bad?”
o-0 dunno, I didn’t know it was….
@Meh I agree it does have several Toradora undertones but yep no where near the greatness of that show.
@Meh: The VA for Aria is the same exact voice for Taiga in Toradora. That’s probably why. Rie is always playing the tsundere loli roles.
It’s pretty much what Shinshiki says. I didn’t find it as boring as Shinshiki does because I do enjoy watching it, but that’s because I know the show isn’t all that great. If it helps explain what the guy who gave it a D- means, he’s saying that a lot of the show is pretty predictable. I too find myself finding a lot of it quite predictable as well. It can’t be helped that a lot of shows can’t be original seeing that it almost has already been done by a load of other animes.
Those who find it AMAZING are narrow minded, but so are those who think it’s the worst anime ever. As long as you watch it and find some entertainment, then you’re fine.
To directly answer the question: The show is bad because the fan base is constantly making it seem like it was god’s creation. It’s also bad in the fact that the plot isn’t as developed as most other animes are this season. It has enough entertainment value to keep people (such as I) interested, but it’s not enough to make people to say it’s that great.
Thanks 🙂
It’s one of only 2 [of 7] shows I look forward to each week this season, the other is Dog Days. I think part of the problem for me is that it’s only 12 episodes, it’s pacing made me think it was going to be at least 24 episodes. Same with C being only 11.
Oh, and thanks for the release. 🙂
because it’s not special
“So, can somebody explain to me why this show is considered bad?”
This is my opinion
1. In Holmes’s point of view, Aria destroy the image of detective.
2. Butei Murderer, but the fellow is from butei… don’t know what it means.. spy?
3. Esper? Detective? Genetic anomaly (hysteria mode)? over than 300 years sentences??
4. The plot is… kinji have fight with aria, they separate, something happens, they team up….
Prison sentences over 300 years aren’t that strange. There was just a story on the news today about a CP ringleader getting 1500 years in prison.
But yeah, I agree with the rest of what you’re saying.
I think the only reason that the show is “bad” by some peoples standards is that it is starting off a bit slow, if it were 24 episodes instead of 12 it would have given the show more time to get into the better arcs that are really interesting in the light novels.
I also think too many people are either just hating since they don’t see something “special” yet or they are just over critical and can’t enjoy the anime for what it is worth. Who knows, maybe some people just can’t be satisfied anymore since they think Naruto and other over-rated anime is so “amazing” that other decent anime doesn’t stand a chance. Lol.
Animation and soundtrack is kind of nice, though I would say characters are weak and have too little depth. None of the character had any memorable attributes, and the guy character is weak and boring and it annoys me. Even with his almighty Hysteria mode he didn’t really do anything impressive during the plane hijack.
They’ve toned that down a lot of stuff from the novels for some reason. Kinji plays a bigger role in the fights, and shows his power more. The fight this episode should have been a lot better than it was. Shirayuki cutting the big computers in half like butter, Kinji catching the sword one-handed, etc…
@zil
yeah, cuz they cut it short. in the LN that scene is more awesome as he learn on the spot how to land the plane (with 11 people telling him the technical stuff)
but seriously, i felt this show is rushed there little (or non) chara development that happened in the LN
oh and thanx for subbing this
I found the series to be very boring, filled with plot holes and forced relationships. To like Aria you would have to be in love with the Tsundere archetype. I mean “Let me live with you Kinji! I’m a princess from another country so you must obey me! If you don’t I’ll shoot you!” Kinji only shows weak protest to these obsurd demands.
Plotholes and lameness:
Why is everyone at a military academy so bad at shooting?
Why doesn’t the Butei killer just… I don’t know, shoot people instead of these “bomb chases”.
If the uniforms are bulletproof why do girls wear skirts with their legs exposed?
Kinji: “This power I get sometimes which makes me have super human reflexes and become a womanizer is such a drag!”
I could go into more depth for an episode by episode analysis but I stopped watching the show.
@Ren
Agree with some of what you’re saying; the reason why most Tsundere are liked are because they grown the the audience; if anything, Aria’s just depicted as a self-centered, manipulative shrew with a bad attitude, which is creating more distance between the audience and the character. As for Kinji, even if he dislikes his “other” personality, it would make more sense for him to place his own survival over that of a few bad character traits.
Ultimately, the entire series feels really contrived, and lacking in understanding of human psychology. Sure, the art and the voice acting is good, but it can’t save a series that doesn’t want to save itself. It’s like the series is in love with itself, and whenever you offer it criticisms, it sticks its fingers in its ears and goes, “La la la la la!”
@Shinshiki
Indeed, it’s like they had multiple themes they liked but tried to mush them all together in an unnatural way resulting in a product that was unrelatable and at times obsurd. I think they wrote themselves into a corner with Aria because her super focused character archetype (twin-tailed loli tsundere with fang) alienated viewers who don’t like that character but nonetheless have to watch a series built around her. For a very loose parallell of high-school comedy/warfare aspect think of Full Metal Panic. The female lead Kaname had tsundere traits but not to the extent that it dominated her character.
@Ren
I tend to like Fumoffu better, but that’s because the story focuses more on the fish-out-of-water aspect than the romantic tensions. Kaname also wasn’t a shrew; sure, she had a strong personality, but nothing about her makes you want to stab her in the stomach with a dull plastic knife, the way Aria does.
Also, nobody has to watch anything; if you choose to watch it, that’s on your own head, although I do agree with you a bit on the focus on Aria. The way the series is presented makes it look like Aria is the main character and Kinji is along for the ride, which also doesn’t really help if they’re targeting a young male audience who want to relate to a strong male character, not who is pushed around all the time, although I’m sure they relate to Kinji’s super-mode, since they wish they themselves had it.
For me, Kinji really feels like a weak rip-off of Shiki from Tsukihime.
@Shinshiki
What I meant by “forced to watch” was that, like it was noted in the review posted above from Anime News Network, the show is about Aria, Aria and Aria. Basically, if you wanted to watch the show for the action scenes, the mystery aspect or Kinji but didn’t like Aria, well too bad! The story, character interactions and actions scenes ALL revolve around her. She is litterly everywhere. So if Aria invokes a feeling like wanting to stab her in the stomach with a dull plastic knife, after watching the show you will want to use a sharper knife to stab yourself in the eyes and/or brain.
@Ren
Yeah, but I have a choice, and I’ve chosen to stop watching it. I was merely responding to why people were saying the show is “bad”.
I dunno, I always had a weak spot for anime with kick ass characters, and episode 1 came off to me as the main character being kick ass which is the reason why I watch it.
On that note, let me name a few things that REALLY annoy me.
1. Most of the things the Butei murderer does (seriously, What the hell)?
2. The fact that she is a descendant of Holmes (that being said, even Aria’s family look at Aria as the black sheep, so that’s forgiven)
3. The thing about the clothes being bullet proof, really feels like a lame ass attempt to explain why they don’t die from being shot.
4. Why is everyone SO BAD at shooting? (Except for the sniper girl, she kicks ass)
5. The super human element (Esper).
6. the VA for Aria (for some reason, I am one of the few who REALLY hate that voice)
7. The fact that Aria seems to contradict with even herself all the time.
8. And most of the things the main protagonist does. (When Aria was fighting the Butei Murderer, why didn’t our protagonist help, for that matter, a total of 50 times did our main protagonist have a chance to detain the Butei murderer but noo, he could only watch and grin).
9. That EVERY SINGLE THING THAT EVER HAPPENED is pushed on Aria’s mother (seriously, she is both Butei murderer, the esper kidnapper and so on and so on)
Some of you might notice I did not mention any plot holes or character development faults and so on, well the reason for that being it would be underhanded of me to name plot holes since almost EVERY MOVIE/SHOW have plot holes. People who complain about plot holes should not for that matter watch anime.
And about character development, there seems to be very little of it in general in anime. Might be just me but in my opinion, this show has more character element than say Nichijou, and less plot holes than many of the other shows that are out there.
Despite all this, I love this show.
Maybe because I watch things for what they are, always have, always will. If you DARE to compare ANYTHING to ANYTHING, you should not watch anything since almost everything is derived from something else, which is derived from something else and so on.
Dammit people, you have no idea how much I hate it when people are comparing shows with studios and so on, saying things like, studio X made excellent shows like A and B but then they made C which does not come close to what they did before, PLEASE, SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE HEAD
tl;dr:
Show has problems, so does everything else.
Also, shoot yourself.
Maybe we’re just a little “biased” in some kind of way. Maybe we went into this show thinking we’d have to see something that matches our expectations of a typical Kugimiya Rie performance, or maybe we just wanted a temporary “Shana” while we waited for season 3 of SnS. Who knows? I think in the end, whether a show is good or not, all depends on what you like and what your preferences are. Screw what others say.
Anyways, for this episode, that last bit where Kinji jumps off the building into the river made me laugh my ass off! It’s like he was thinking “f**k this, I can’t take this shit anymore!” and then *jump*
@TheThing
The “Nothing is perfect so we should forgive all of Aria’s flaws” is a poor argument. Other shows have flaws but generally not as large or many as Aria does hence the comparrisons. If you like watching anime independent of it’s quality then good for you (and for the anime studios). “Liking a show for what it is” should mean you don’t try to fit the show into your preferred genre when it is not. Aria tried to do something very specific, and didn’t do it very well.
@Ren: My argument is not: “Nothing is perfect so we should forgive all of Aria’s flaws”, it’s more of the note: “People were expecting much and are complaining of every small detail”.
There are many things wrong with every show, and for me, this show has no more flaws then just about anything else.
Many people are saying how it’s supposed to be some light show (previous comments), but that isn’t the case since it gives off a more darker image, especially with guns and mysterious powers.
AKA, the story is incredibly poorly done in my opinion, the characters are very cliched, especially generic Rie loli #1723648… I mean Aria.
On another aspect there are people like this: “OMG SHE USED A DRAGUNOV AND THAT’S IN COD, AND I LOVE COD, SO THIS ANIME MUST BE GOOD.”
Of course, I’m not saying everyone is like that but I think a bunch of people think anime with guns are good, which I beg to differ.
The ending song makes me lul all day. Like seriously have you read the lyrics? They’re pretty derp lol, nothing about the actual sound, but there it is.
And seriously, Kinji’s the dumbest main character I have ever encountered. Split personality is usually interesting and presents itself as a plot twist or part of mystery containing twins… but honestly, his personality changes to some fabulous guy when he gets aroused? Like seriously? That’s just dumb in my opinion.
@TheThing
The fact that you can list 9 things that are wrong with it just proves how BAD IT IS.
The fact that you ENJOY IT doesn’t make a difference to why it’s bad.
What I got out of you comment was this, “This shows is riddled with flaws, but I love it anyway.” Which just leads to saying, yeah the show is bad.
Don’t get me wrong, I watch bad shows all the time and I enjoy them greatly, that doesn’t just make them good.
@syao
i don’t watch naruto :p. Actually i don’t like the idea main chara that weak (???) but have hidden power that make him “pleiboi” with super power.
i don’t know. When i read the light novel it’s just feel better. I think it’s because the anime is toned down somehow. Second bad gun cg. This anime would be better without it. The third is because i feel they won’t show kanna before season 2. That if they have season 2.
Despite all of the amazing roles Kugi Rei has had and the ‘variety’ performed, such as Al from FMA and Taiga from Toradora. This role is written with zero character just so she can say baka kinji and urusai every other phrase. I love the show, but every time she pulls out the full-on Kugi Rei act, I cringe a little at the cliche. -_-
Still wonderfully cute, hehe.
I just QC’d this episode (haven’t seen any other episodes), and it seems pretty good to me. No idea why people would call it “bad”.
okay i am just going to ignore whatr ren and shinshiki (or w/e the name was) said (especially since it was too long and I didn’t feel like reading it) and agree with this
FlameHaze Says:

It’s awesome. Some people are just stupid. >_>
so Urusai noobs.
and by the way… the VA for aria is the same as taiga and the va for kinji is the same as Ryuuji
lol I hope Hidan no Aria fans are being somewhat facetious when they mimic Aria’s nonsensical retaliatory comebacks.
“Contrived, filled with plot holes and bad characterization? How about you shut up!”
@NekoZauza
>okay i am just going to ignore whatr ren and shinshiki (or w/e the name was) said (especially since it was too long and I didn’t feel like reading it)
You can’t argue what you didn’t read. That statement is just riddled with failure.
@Ren
Not to be judgmental, but if they can’t bother to read a couple paragraphs, they probably also don’t know what “facetious” means.
I’m curious as to why all the people who DON’T like the show still end up on the comment section of said show. If you don’t like it fine, its not your cup of tea, there are other people who can enjoy the show.
I just think its strange that your here saying you don’t like the show, doesn’t that sorta mean your either here to download it or just complain that it didn’t come out to your high and mighty expectations? That or like some people you don’t like Kugi Rie so you just auto hate the show because of that as well, which I’m not saying is wrong, if you don’t like the VA, so be it lol.
And to the people saying Kinji is a weak/pathetic main character, what did you want from him? Be completely unstoppable so that he beats the shit out of everything in his way without obstacle? Wouldn’t that be kind of boring to watch? “Oh here he comes -boom boom boom- Ok everyones down and out, now what?” And about Hysteria Savant Syndrome, yeah its a silly concept to get over powered due to be sexually aroused, but atleast its an interesting idea, and it starts to make more sense why he doesn’t like HSS and why he seems so “weak”.
Aria…meh I’ll agree she annoys the hell out of me. I personally like Reki more than Aria, silent and epic anyone? Lol.
Any show that plays (even if it is a rip off of) carmina burana when there is high danger caused by panties is epic win in my mind.
IDK, this show is great xD
@Syao
“So, can somebody explain to me why this show is considered bad?” Is what Kristen wrote in the post. Normally I don’t comment on shows I stop watching but its nice to see what people do or don’t like about a show if the question is raised. That said, most people who liked the show didn’t elaborate very much on why they did.
@Ren
Mm, fair enough, you are giving your own valid reasons for not liking the show, I can respect that. And true I guess no one has given reasons for why they liked it, I’ll be the first lol.
Its action and comedy with some romance sprinkled in there, so that normally gets my attention as I need something to get me laughing. I personally like Rie so seeing her as the VA made me want to watch the show as well.
I also liked the fact that not everyone was absurdly perfect in their combat abilities, Kinji is useless without Hysteria Mode, Aria is impulsive and annoying but has more brute force than everyone else, Reki is an amazing snipe but as its somewhat noticable, she doesn’t talk much, etc etc.
They also do attempt to keep in fact that it is a SCHOOL for training these teenagers to work as armed mercenaries (Butei are pretty much mercenaries that aren’t allowed to kill). An example would be the plane jacking incident and how they did use other classmates to help them get out of their predicament.
But I’ll be fair, its slow paced right now and I can see why people are hating it, JC Staff is also doing a poor job in character personality since they are rushing to cram everything into 12 episodes and also skipping little details that could help with character development.
I also have higher hopes than most people for this anime since I ended up reading the light novels and there are things I want to see in action. Hopefully JC Staff doesn’t fuck this up like they did Yumekui Merry.
Overall, I enjoy the anime, I hope it keeps going as it is so far since even though character development is poor, its staying pretty straightfoward with the story and hopefully will end with a decent fight. (Which guess-timating on what I’ve read, they can probably do the next arc in the episodes they have left, which should make for a good comfrontation.)
@Syao
Regarding: “And to the people saying Kinji is a weak/pathetic main character, what did you want from him? Be completely unstoppable so that he beats the shit out of everything in his way without obstacle? Wouldn’t that be kind of boring to watch? “Oh here he comes -boom boom boom- Ok everyones down and out, now what?” And about Hysteria Savant Syndrome, yeah its a silly concept to get over powered due to be sexually aroused, but atleast its an interesting idea, and it starts to make more sense why he doesn’t like HSS and why he seems so “weak”.”
My problem with Kinji is that he’s spineless; he doesn’t so much go with the flow so much as the flow knocks him over, then kicks him in the stomach repeatedly while he’s down. And his Hysteric Savant Syndrome is pretty much a ripoff of Shiki from Tsukihime, who anemic and has a similar genetic condition, and was also involved in a harem situation. I don’t need Kinji to be overpowered; I just want him to be more than just fate’s practice dummy with an occasional moment of him being semi-competent.
A mercenary company that doesn’t allow its employees to kill will quickly find itself having to recruit new employees. Just wanted to throw that one out there.
@Syao
If what people say about the light novels is true, the anime is a watered down version and the quality shows. It’s a damn shame when studios try to cram too much story into too little time. I remember when they made the Tales of Symphonia OVA they tried to fit an 80 hour game into 8 episodes. Since that was hardly any time to do the story justice they practically had to write a new one which was awful. It made me sad thinking that it could have been much better as a prequel movie (like Vesperia) or a full 26 episode series (like Abyss) but since they did such a horrible job they would never try again. If you aren’t going to give a project 100% you shouldn’t do it period.
@Shinshiki
As Ren stated below you they water down Kinjji considerably in the anime, he has a bit more gut in him then the anime is giving him justice. And he does have his reasons for being “spineless”, I just don’t want to spoil it since it gives away future story. And I never saw Tsukihime so I wouldn’t know. Hopefully the next few episodes are done correctly and he doesn’t seem as spineless.
@Ren
You are absolutely correct. This anime has the potential to do amazing, but JC Staff has been fucking up the series they pick up for adaptations for the last good while. Its going to be a shame if they mess up this one since it gets incredible later on. I wish some other company had picked it up and had done a prequel movie or expanded it into 24 episodes so that characters could develop a lot better than they have so far. If they end this season semi decently and somehow get a second season going I would hope they pace it better than this fiasco since the later half is so far the most action packed and entertaining.
@Shinshiki:
I don’t quite agree with the opinion that Hysteria mode is identical to Shiki from Tsukihime. I read Tsukihime and there was no Hysteria mode in it, only a guy that could see “lines” and had to man up in order to survive.
@Azure_Shockwave
Listing 9 things wrong is no problem for every show out there. It’s called nitpicking. You can nitpick in every show and create a long long list of things you find wrong in it. Does not mean a movie/anime is bad.
Heck, if we wanna talk about a huge failure, then I can name nothing else than the movie Thor that just came out >_<
@Sayo & @Ren:
Even if it's watered down version of the light novel, it still brings the story to other viewers that had never even heard of the series. Watching this anime gives me an overview of the characters and the storyline and I find it helps a lot when you start reading the Light Novel.
In fact, I might say I'm getting pretty interested in reading the light novels myself 🙂
