To Aru Kagaku no Railgun – 04

In this episode, Biribiri makes a contract with Alastor and becomes a flame haze. Fits, because she’s just tsundere enough. Actually, lol @ “I heard it was popular a ways back”.

EDIT: Amazon has 8 BDs of Railgun, each running at 72 minutes for the same price as each other. It will be 24 episodes long.

Also, please give your best wishes to DmonHiro, who told me he was going to walk his dogs, and quit IRC a few hours later. I have no choice but to assume his dogs ganged up on him and mauled him, then with his last moment of consciousness, DmonHiro went to his house, and, too injured to say goodbye, hit the exit button on IRC. He may still be in his house unconscious as I write this! 🙁 (***)

OKAY SO DISREGARD THE POST ABOVE. THIS IS A LOT MORE IMPORTANT: OMFG LAMBORGHINI GALLARDO LP560-4 (NOT THE SPYDER YOU RETARDS). THIS MAKES RAILGUN THE BEST FUCKING SHOW. FUCK YOU ALL. (Not that the Gallardo LP560-4 is better than the Murcielago LP640-4 SV).

I JUST JIZZED SO HARD IN MY PANTS

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG >_<

720p: TSUN TSUN!

480p: D-D-D-Dere dere~ *Blush*

Damn I’m fast ^_^. All hail Chihiro!

  • Nohta

Does anyone else notice that the post says that it was posted on “Oct 29th, 2007”? Or is that just something in my browser screwing up? lol Just thought I’d point that out.

Anyway, thanks for keeping up with this series so far ^^

  • lance-ps

    Good work but faster plz!

  • LordOmnit

@ Nohta: the year is always 2007 for some reason.

    Thanks for another episode Chihiro!

  • Maverick

Only on the comments page for some, probably even weirder, reason.

  • DmonHiro

I’m very much alive you know. You know very well I always forget to log back in. Just for that, no ZKC 14 and Asura 17 for you.

  • Kristen

The answer is “Don’t kill me off like that!”, not that. T_T

The Boke And Tsukkomi routine fails otherwise. 🙁

  • Fenix

Hmm well if no other releases, how about a “loli a day” type of post for each day with no releases?

  • DmonHiro

this series is gettin better with each episode xD

  • Lero

Don’t reduce biri biri to common tsundere chracater D=

  • Kalessin

You know. I believe that this episode contradicts To Aru Majutsu no Index with regards to Touma. Granted, it’s a spin-off, but, personally, I think that it’s worth less/not as good when it doesn’t actually fit in properly with what was spun off from. It’s still entertaining, but I do find the fact that they don’t match to be disappointing.

  • Fenix

I wouldn’t call this series a spin off. If you watch the index intro, you see two familiar faces whom are prominent in this series. I believe, because of this, that this actually takes place before the index series.

  • cloud668

    @ Fenix:
Taking place before Index (and it actually started three days before Index if that counts) doesn’t make it any less a spin off. Especially when it is stated in like, the very first cut in ep 1.

  • Shadow

I’m guessing this will eventually overlap with the events of Index, as this is before Toma lost his memories. And it’s also explains how and why he was so familiar with Biribiri in the beginning of Index. I love when those two get together in an ep!

I also found it cool how Biribiri’s face was on the manga, with Shana and Chigusa on the cover, that she replaced in the rack (3:56). 😉

  • Kalessin

The first episode of Index made it pretty clear that while Touma knew Mikoto by reputation, she didn’t know him at all. So, that would have been their first meeting. This episode of Railgun clearly has the two of them not knowing each other _at all_ – reputation or otherwise – when Touma attempts to save her from the guys hitting on her on the sidewalk. They definitely contradict. The general idea is the same, but their first meeting happens differently.

Also, in Index, it seems pretty clear that Touma is always refusing to fight Mikoto whenever she asks for a rematch, while Railgun seems to take the stance that they keep fighting over and over with him winning ever time. He’s irritated that she keeps trying to fight him, but he still fights her, unlike in Index.

I expect that we’ll see Index and Railgun overlap more as we go along, but right now it looks like the manga probably contradicts the anime and novels (assuming that the anime followed the novels with regards to how Mikoto and Touma met) and like Railgun is following the manga that it’s based on – at least that would be my guess. As such, Railgun and Index theoretically run parallel to one another but when it comes to the details, it’s like an alternate telling of the story which is similar but not the same.

In any case, while the basic idea is the same, the details are different between Index and Railgun, so they contradict and can’t really exist in the same cannon.

  • happyGuy

    the more episodes, the better.

    i <3 biribiri. XD

  • God

    @ Kalessin

Index starts off with Touma not knowing Mikoto fyi.

  • Shadow

I just watched the beginning of Index ep 1 again, and to me (my opinion), they had a familiarity and not one of first meeting. She wasn’t suprised at his right hand dissipating her attack. Also, she hasn’t shown him the railgun as of yet in this series, so her explaining of it to him on the bridge could have been the first time. I think she keeps challenging him as her form of flirting.

Right or wrong, that’s just my take on it. 😉

  • Kalessin

    @God

He doesn’t know her personally, but he knows her by reputation. He tried to stop the guy from hitting on her in the restaurant because he knew that she was one of the level 5 espers and that the guy would be in big trouble if he kept bugging her. So, he knew _of_ her, but he had never met her. Of course, it backfired horribly and that guy and all his buddies got wasted by her, but he did try.

In Railgun, he tries to save her from some guys hitting on her in the street, and it looks like not only did they not know each other, but he didn’t even know her by reputation at that point. So, there’s a clear contradiction between the two.

  • Shadow

And to add, that attack on the bridge was a huge first attack, not something she’d use on some guy she’s never seen in action, imo.

  • Kalessin

    @Shadow
Well, I just watched it and my take on it was different. No, she doesn’t freak out when he blocks her attack, but she does ask him why a level 0 was unharmed by her attack. She then gets really mad about it – or at least the fact that Touma doesn’t explain and just says that it must be her bad luck and misfortune. They don’t really act like they know each other, and they definitely _don’t_ act with the level of familiarity that they did at every point in this episode of Railgun after he tried to save her from the punks hitting on her as well as every point in Index after they run into each other in the first episode. No, she hasn’t explained the railgun to him in Railgun, but I definitely got the impression that their first encounter in Index was really their first encounter.

In any case, we’ll have to see whether they try and claim in Railgun that their first meeting in Index happens later or whether they never touch it at all (which would imply that they reversioned their first meeting rather than their first meeting in Index not really being their first meeting).

  • DragonRanger

Is there any visual quality difference between the 720p and 480p that a good (realtime) upscaler wont fix? I only ask as I remember there was a shot comparing the two that showed 720p was just upscaled 480p, but does the actual encode change that (more compression artifacts or stuff like that)?

  • Kalessin

If the original video was in 720p, then it’ll be better than upscaled 480p. Upscaling just increases the scale. It can’t add detail because it doesn’t have that information. So, for instance, if you were to downscale a 720p video to 480p and then back up to 720p, the result would be the same resolution but with less detail because detail was lost when downscaling to 480p. So, yes there is a quality difference between a video that started in 720p and one which was upscaled to 720p.

  • lett303

any news on gendai mahou AVI ?

  • Kalessin

Okay. It looks to be official that they met about a month _before_ Index started. That is, if the translation over at Baka-Tsuki for the prologue of the first novel is to be believed. He even mentions that the last time he ran into her, he’d acted like she had won, and she ended up chasing him all night – which is basically what happened in this episode. Of course, the first episode of Index cut down on the details, so it was not obvious that they had met before, and on that alone, it’s certainly up to interpretation. My bet is that almost everyone watching it for the first time thought that it was their first meeting.

In any case, I’m not sure that Railgun is canon, so while it may match the novels and/or Index, it isn’t necessarily officially what happened as far as officialdom goes. Railgun is based on the manga which is done by someone completely different. Still, they appear to have made an effort to make them match up, and with the additional information in the novel, it appears that the two shows do actually match up and that the events of the current episode are around a month prior to the start of Index, so that actually gives us a timeframe, which we were missing. Index starts on July 19th, so if we ever get an actual date in Railgun, we can figure out exactly where they line up.

In any case, it appears to be official that they met prior to Index and it looks like the events in Railgun might match how they officially met (if that’s covered anywhere in the novels, I haven’t read it since about all that Baka-Tsuki has translated at the moment is the prologue for the first novel).

  • DragonRanger

@Kalessin: It’s been shown that the 720p is just upscaled 480p already (confirmed by chihiro downscaling the 720 to 480, then upscaling back 720, and doing a side by side with the original unscaled image). However, my question is if the encoding process itself (macroblock cleanup, noise removal, sharpening etc etc) results in the 720p being of better quality then the 480p due to whatever factors (higher bitrate or something).

  • Kalessin

Well, in that case, it would come down to the difference between what the encoders were able to do to it with their encoding software taking time to do it vs how well the specific player that you’re using is able to do on the fly. I think that it’s pretty much a guarantee that the best case for such a situation is that your player matches what the encoder did. It’s not going to do better, and it will likely do worse since it’s on the fly. However, whether it’s enough worse to notice is going to depend on the exact video in question and exactly how it was encoded. You’d have to compare the 480p and the 720p on your computer to see whether they’re basically equivalent in this case – particularly since it’s a question of the encoder vs your player since you’re the one watching it. My guess is that the 720p is better, but it may not be enough better for you to notice unless you’re really picky.

  • Kalessin

Actually, I have to add that the fact that the 720p is in h264 and 480p is in xvid could muddle things a bit. I still think that that means that it’s more likely that the 720p is better, but it makes it’s more along the lines of comparing apples to oranges since it’s not just the resolution and codec settings which changed, but also the codec.

  • Kristen

Um… what? 720p and 480p are both in h.264 using the exact same settings except resolution, merange, and bitrate.

    I LOVE YOU KRISTEN!!!

  • Cyber1

If there’s anything ongoing that can be compared to Shana except for Shana S, that’s 11eyes.
Regarding 720p vs. 480p, seems like a moot point to me since both are TV-rips which nobody in their right mind would archive. Wait for BD and compare then.
As for trackers, there were some advices that I completely agree with, but since you seem to ignore them (with this release at least), dealing with future anirena faults will be your problem as well.
    Thanks for release.

    I LOVE YOU MORE KRISTEN!!!!

    @Kalessin:
-The first meet was in the street when Touma tried to save Mikoto form those thugs.
-The second meet, Mikoto tried to match Touma, he refused but at the end Mikoto attacked him.
-The third meet, Touma appeared to save the people on a market from a dangerous explotion, Touma ignored Mikoto.
-The fourth meet, Touma tried to save other thugs from Mikoto, since he already know the fate of those guys, the next day Touma met Index ans started to get troubles with the magic side, since then he has no time for a pseudo-matches with Mikoto, meanwhile he keeps traveling around the world with his magical friends.
LOL Mikoto doesn’t know Touma name XD.

    Railgun manga is canon.
    Railgun anime is non canon.

@Shadow: They’re about 21 vols. of light novels and Mikoto still don’t have any idea about Touma right hand(Imagine Breaker), she has the impression that he have electrical powers like her. The bridge scene was the first time Mikoto used the railgun(only railgun manga) against him… she is a bit crazy(like others lvl.5s) to do that.

  • Greorgy

    P.S. Matti has herpes.

  • Deku

well…mmmm….. some answers are wrong..¬¬ ..XD … you have to read the novels if you want to know everithing about this anime…the first meet…second meet etc ..
    PS:
-Of course..some answers are correct…but, it tends to confuse everyone…for example…biribiri knows touma’s name¬¬….and if you read the novels …in vol 16 …she realizes her feelings for Touma….
-the manga, anime and novels are not the same, they have some very small differences, but each one of them follows the main story…

    Thanks for this episode XD

  • Kalessin

    @Kristen
I thought that the 480p releases were usually in xvid. But I never download them, so obviously I didn’t know what you were up to with those codec wise. I stand corrected.

  • YOU’RE ALL MISSING THE FUCKING POINT

OKAY SO DISREGARD THE POST ABOVE. THIS IS A LOT MORE IMPORTANT: OMFG LAMBORGHINI GALLARDO LP560-4 (NOT THE SPYDER YOU RETARDS). THIS MAKES RAILGUN THE BEST FUCKING SHOW. FUCK YOU ALL. (Not that the Gallardo LP560-4 is better than the Murcielago LP640-4 SV)

Yuri DFC Lolighini is Fuckwin, Kristen! ^^ YOU ARE NOT WRONG.

Gushing comments/nose/pants aside, thanks again for the hard work, guys! 😀

  • KJacket

Reading all of the comments above was almost like a kusion joke. This anime was okay but it’s not really that good … yet. I can’t say the manga was too good either. Since I haven’t read the VN, I don’t know the differences but more action would be awesome.
    So thanks for the releases.

  • I loved it, and thank you very much Chihiro! I reckon you’re the best of the ones doing Railgun at the moment (though I also have to give props to Mazui’s speedsubbing), and I’ve really grown to love it (more than Index, which I went back and watched after seeing Railgun 1+2, and thought it wasn’t as good; but, hey, tastes differ…).

24 eps is a good length, in my opinion. I thought Index suffered from a plot overdose, and that Touma and Index were less interesting than the side characters, which is why I think the side story Railgun is a lot better. It’ll be nice to see a more measured approach to what I’m sure is going to have a pretty awesome plot, but also focus on the fun characters through it all. This being fandom, of course, your mileage may vary! 🙂

Kusion, it’s even worse than you think. This scientist is so amazingly wrapped up in her research that not only did she forget that normal people wear clothes in public, but she forgot where she parked her Lamborghini. That cannot bode well for her sanity.

Oh, and the OP and ED are out—and, yep, in the grand tradition of Engrish lyrics, everyone (including me) got it wrong…

    Looking!
The blitz loop this planet can search way
Only my RAILGUN can shoot it! 今すぐ

…”The blitz loop”. Yes. Really. Even knowing it, it still doesn’t sound obvious, but there you go, and the lyrics are much darker than the driving catchy techno beat implies. (It’s still not as Engrish-tastic as the Wolf Whistling Song, mind you…!)

Finally, I cannot hear them mention “Level 5″s without thinking of the chaos that could be unleashed if they met three ‘certain’ bratty “Level 7″s. It may not be the same universe, but part of me wants it to be. 🙂

  • venomqo

    @KJacket

this is where i say different people like different things.

  • Lero

Upss Mikoto know Touma name since the third arc of Index :P.
Well Mikoto is one of the lasts girls who admited they love for Touma…. Guess who is the other one??
    3…
    2…
    1…
    Index.
And the Touma was near to kill a hijacker with a bloodlust for the sake of Index, in the vol.17 .

BTW Railgun is fine, but I prefer Index over Railgun because the interaction between the various characters are very interesting, also their trips around the worls in Italy, France, Rusia, etc.

Myoukochou: “It’ll be nice to see a more measured approach to what I’m sure is going to have a pretty awesome plot, but also focus on the fun characters through it all.”

-Only the plot and fight against the evil fetus of the opening, later Accelerator & Touma are going to steal the show like this chapter . You know, Mikoto was useless against Accelerator & Touma in the third arc, I’m sure that Railgun is going to end focussing the clones arc of Index in the point of view of Mikoto, finding Touma lying in the ground meanwhile Accelerator is doing the genkidama XD.
