Wow! The file size of the release, including op/ed, is … wow!

But, actually, this show seems to be very compressible, except for op/ed there are few fast scenes…

I see that you used crf rate control – well, this one is the example why one shouldn’t do this, AFAIU.

Crf rate control was designed for real life footage (RLF)/human eye combination: as such it boosts qp on static scenes (because in RLF “static” scenes are not static at all and the picture is very complex – think of all the grass, foiliage (-under wind!), etc – the RLF “static scene” is actually VERY complex , and because a viewer has time to absorb it (it’s “static” after all!) – our eye would see the slightest artifacts — that’s why CRF boosts qp on those frames.

As for the fast scenes – in RLF fast is really fast and complex – our eyes cannot really follow real-life fast-ness, that’s why CRF does rob those frames of qp – we won’t notice it anyway.

BUT! The above is exactly what we don’t want for anime! Why? Because anime is not RLF!

In anime static scenes/backgrounds are static without “”, boosting their qp is huge waste of bits.

On the other hand, fast scenes in anime are not as complex as in real life (a lot of simple geometrical shapes, simple uniform movements, etc) – that’s why decreasing qp (er, increasing!) – that’s why decreasing quality for anime fast scenes is a no-no – as the scenes are not THAT complex, our eyes would immediately catch all those artifacts, etc.

    What to do?

Use 2pass. During 1st pass x264 would know which frames are easy, which frames are complex, and during 2nd pass it would destribute/move bits from static scenes to complex ones (while staying within the specified average bitrate for the whole episode).

The only thing is that for this particular anime’s HUGE descrepancy between heavy OP and generally static episode, the default value of qcomp=0.6 is not enough.

qcomp sets the limit of re-distribution of bits between frames. Actually, qcomp=0.6 is too restrictive for any anime. I usually use 0.8, but for this one I would use 0.9 – untie x264’s hands, let it go nuts!

I guess, average 2000-2100kbps rate should be enough, with high qcomp the peak rate on OP would be probably over 15-20mbps – which is what we want.

    dixi.
