As many of you know, I’ve worked on several projects with Chihiro over the past 16 months. However, I currently find myself at a difficult and desperate point. I currently owe my university $2127 for this semester, and if I don’t pay it off by November 20th, I won’t be able to register for classes for next semester. I’ve maxed out my government financial aid, I’ve spent all the money in my bank account toward tuition, I can’t get any private loans because of my family’s terrible credit history, and my parents can’t help me because they don’t have any money to spare after paying their bills. So, as a last-ditch effort, I’m asking you, the loyal (and not-so-loyal) supporters of Chihiro, to help me in my hour of need. Every little bit that you can chip in would help. See, this would be a violation of “fansub ethics” (I didn’t know there was such a thing in the first place, seeing as how fansubbing is illegal) if I said “You can’t download our fansubs unless you pay me.” Asking for donations is completely different. In fact, Chihiro (and most other fansub groups) have accepted donations for a long time. So, fail troll is fail. gb2/b/.
And the difference is, I had shitty grades in high school because I thought fansubbing would be a better use of my time (because let’s face it, high school is a waste of time–anyone who’s been to an American high school can attest to this), so I didn’t qualify for a lot of scholarships. Right now, I have A’s in all my college courses, so, I imagine a 4.0 would have a lot more scholarships available for next semester (once official transcripts for this semester come out).
I’m sure glad here in Australia, students don’t need to pay a cent for uni until they graduate and find a job :d

Soichiro, hang in there. Your acknowledgment of the potential you now have is admirable. If someone doesn’t want to contribute, so what? In my opinion? Tell them to STFU !!!! This isn’t their blog nor are they entitled anymore than anyone else. Free speech, sure. Try learning what dignity is. Asking for help is part of it. And, if someone makes mistakes, who are you to judge? Hypocritical bullshit from the peanut galleries. I enjoy the fansubbing effort. I don’t mind giving back. As a post second graduate, I find it extremely difficult to believe that any state would not be able to fully fund university ed. There’re scenerios of what you said may happen. Its also a place where fools gather, cryin over a fake story and decide to help someone they dont know, the fact they dont even know if its true or not, but rather decide based on a story told many times over……. Sorry can’t help you, I am going to school myself and I have used up all my financial aid. I am not working while going to school. All my school bills are paid which is a plus for me.

Yes they are. I pay just under $3,000 per quarter at my school, not including books, parking, living, etc… We are supposed to pay a few weeks before classes start but they will allow you to defer payments for a short time.

And I’m attending Ball State University right now. It’s around $8,000 a semester total. And yes, I’m sure I really want to study psychology. I enjoy it, and it can be useful for all sorts of professions. I wanted to do CS for a long time, until I worked at a programming job over the summer and found out how mind-numbingly boring it is. Besides, even if I do need a masters to really do much with it, at least it’s still more useful than an English or Art degree. :p

Yes I am downloading anime illegally, so are you. I have a lot of time on my hands at the moment and watching anime helps fill that time as it is very hard to do much when you can’t use one arm!
I appreciate the work Sochiro and others do in the fansubbing community, but I don’t think that anyone should ask for money from strangers on the grounds that they provide a free service of their own free-will! Sochiro choses to spend his free time subbing anime unpaid, a better use of his time would be a job to pay his fees. Of course I would prefer him to continue his subbing, but in reality we all have to do things we would rather not do.

@ the above comment, R1 is all well and good but its harder to get dvds when you are in Europe, you have to import ones from Japan and have no subs or get them from America and not be able to play them. (I’m probably wrong but hey I can’t find many anime DVD’s here in the uk)

If I was forced to pay to download anime I wouldn’t complain. However donations to support fansubbing groups are voluntary, and I choose whether or not I wish to pay. However that is not the issue. Someone is asking for money to pay their tuition fees, they knew they would have to be paid and yet they have no money, forward planning is a wonderful thing!
If I could translate and encode myself I would not be here. And if the DVD’s were available in the UK I probably would purchase them, however anime is not widely available here and current series are probably not going to be available for over a year.
You say it’s like asking for petrol money (or gas as you americans say) and that would be true if he was asking us to donate for server fees, but he isn’t! I appreciate the work he does as a fansubber but if he wants to get an education he should pay his own fees, unless he’s going to pay us back when he graduates? Somehow I doubt that!

As amusing as these posts are, maybe people could see that a little generosity and compassion for others during a pretty tough time, historically speaking, in the US. No one is forcing you to donate; no one is forcing you to read the damned post.
